So, you think Samsung should just have carte blanche to copy the iPhone 3GS (the issue that set this whole thing off) with no repercussions?
Samsung blatantly copied the iPhone 3GS and iOS at the time (the later nonsense with the Galaxy Tab was not valid in my opinion, but such is life) and Apple were within their rights to sue over that. A large number of independent reviewers at the time (including pro-Android sites) mentioned the uncomfortable resemblance to Apple's current flagship phone at the time of the Galaxy's release, unlike any other Android phone that shipped around that time. They were all vaguely rectangular in similar shades of black with big touch screens, but Samsung went a little too close to "copying".
It was not surprising at all that they were sued, and the idea that they could get a free pass because they could "sue back" was clearly what they were banking on.
Samsung and HTC both have standard FRAND licensing rates. However, generally everyone just cross-licenses patents instead of paying cash royalties.
Apple doesn't want to cross-license, but also complains that the (standard, charged the same to everyone) cash royalty rates are too high.
Actually, in the lawsuit where that was discussed (Nokia vs Apple), Apple claimed that Nokia was undervaluing the patents Apple held, not that the licensing rate for the FRAND patents was too high. It's a subtle difference.
You can use pump and probe techniques to follow chemical reactions, so while it may not have direct "profit" it will be useful for scientific discovery.
You posted something that excuses Apple's behavior by not painting the story as something evil that Apple is doing. I'm surprised all you got was a -1 mod.
It's not magic. Talk to my daughter who had frightful warts on her fingers. Nitrogen, peeling gels, tape... nothing worked for years. Six weeks into a homeopathic treatment and they were 50% reduced. Gone at 13 weeks. You can blather about coincidence all you want. It worked in that case. And I'll happily try it myself anytime.
Since you didn't log in, this story is obviously false.
Further evidence that homeopathy is nonsense. Even its proponents won't stand behind it publicly.
Rupert Murdoch is best buddies with Hunt, and all of his actions are "guided" by what News Corps wants, so as long as Sky doesn't believe in homeopathy then we'll be fine.
Hardware-wise, Macs are 2 generations behind. Apple's not even trying in the desktop market.
With the Mac Pro? Definitely. It's the red-headed stepchild of the Mac lineup right now. No one should buy one.
For the rest of the lineup, "2 generations" simply isn't accurate. The laptops are all on Ivy Bridge with current generation GPUs where applicable, the iMac and Mac Mini are on Sandy Bridge (but due to be updated some time this month).
Given that the vast majority (something like 65%+) of their sales are laptops, hardware-wise Apple are pretty current.
The Mac Pro is something of an aberration right now that is on no danger of becoming decent for some time (at least 2013).
iTunes music files are DRM free and have been since 2009. All previous DRM-covered tracks can be downloaded from iCloud within iTunes - you can look up your past purchases and redownload them with no DRM.
The only difference between an "official" iTunes file and an mp3 is that the iTunes file is in AAC audio format. There is no DRM and no restriction on copying them.
I use them in Ubuntu, for example, and my cousin uses hers on her stock Samsung Galaxy Ace with the built in music player.
The movies and TV shows still have DRM, however. That has not gone away yet - I do not buy any movies and TV from the store for this reason.
Bruce just has to give his daughters his iTunes files from his hard drive - they are totally unencumbered audio files. Well, he would have to do that if this story were true. It has been suggested that the whole "suing Apple" thing is a hoax.
I'm sorry, but did you see the same sales numbers for Samsung's tablets as everyone else did? They're barely in the noise at the baseline of the graph.
Phones maybe - Samsung are certainly head and shoulders above everyone else except Apple (ie, other phone makers), depending on what time of year you look at the figures. If it's nearing an iPhone refresh, Apple goes down, if it's just after, Apple goes up. Either way, they tend to share the top few spots between themselves.
Xerox were paid with Apple stock, which they unwisely sold off. They later tried to sue after they realised that not only did they let the UI cat out of the bag without making as much as they should have, they also sold off their Apple stock that became much more valuable after they sold it off cheaply.
Apple didn't do anything against Xerox, unless you consider bringing two of the things Xerox developed to market in a wildly successful manner - the GUI and the mouse.
Steve Jobs even told them outright that they were "sitting on a goldmine" and was amazed that they had no plans to bring the mouse to market, and said "do you mind if we do instead?"
It's hardly Apple's fault they were the ones to see the value in what Xerox had and were able to exploit it - they gave Xerox enough chances and did licence the GUI from them. It was only after all that messy "taking a risk in the market" stuff was all done with and the results turned out to be popular and profitable that Xerox suddenly said "hey wait a minute!".
It's one of the biggest cases of "we told you so" in history. Jobs was practically goading them into releasing the mouse he was so taken with how it was going to revolutionise interaction with computers.
Xerox lost their lawsuit because the law takes a dim view of seller's remorse and isn't in the business of protecting a company from its own mistakes and questionable business decisions.
I am European, and I think %anything% free should be available to anyone in EU, as part of basic human rights.
And this is why much of Europe is broke and and the EU is on the verge of breaking up. Of course, we American's are not doing much better. But the point is that our priorities are all out of whack. Everyone seems to want something for nothing. This attitude will not last the test of time.
Funnily enough, that's not it.
The countries in Europe with the most expansive and expensive social welfare programmes are doing relatively well. It's the countries that followed the US financial model more closely (Greece and Ireland especially, and the UK somewhat) with an over-reliance on the financial sector as the next great engine of their economies and a tax system that ensured they were sitting on a bubble that eventually burst.
The countries that are now bailing them out are the ones with the high taxes and extensive welfare state provisions, like Germany, France and (again to a lesser extent, since we fucked up too), the UK.
It's not welfare programmes that bankrupted certain Eurozone countries, it was the financial policies at the other end of the scale - the banks, the toxic loans, the irresponsible tax policy, financial deregulation and the shedding of manufacturing and other things that previously kept the economy going. The welfare state is the reason that we don't have a social underclass who lost everything when the economy crashed and had some support until they were able to get back to work again without losing everything they owned.
You're also mistaken if you think "much of" Europe is broke.
No he had it right the first time. Over half the budget goes towards either Social Security or Medicare. The military spending is only ~20% of the total budget and after Obama's cuts kick-in, it will drop even lower.
Who said anything about "taking our ball home"? I'm perfectly happy to TRADE with Euros. I just bought several old Analog magazines from a British gentleman.
But that doesn't mean I want to fight their wars! If for example: Britain or France suddenly decided to go to war against Iran. That's why we should disentangle ourselves as allies, so WE the people through congress get to decide if Libya is worth fighting, rather than it be an automatic declaration decided by a treaty.
I honestly can't believe you're saying that with a straight face.
You're worried about being dragged into *our* wars against your will?! Man, that's funny.
I guess the UK went to war with Afghanistan and Iraq on trumped up evidence, destroying the remaining credibility of the then-current ruling Labour Party just for shits and giggles eh?
I suppose your comment could be satirical, but it's hard to tell.
They have their own problems they don't want to face, like the fact that their continent is falling apart as their socialist and fascist policies have destroyed their economy such that nothing is left but the facade, and that is starting to break apart.
This from the country that renamed the food in the White House canteen "Freedom Fries" because a particular nation didn't believe that Iraq should be invaded.
LOL. What's sadder, that I keep checking back for responses or that you keep making them? Eh "pops"? You keep trying to make your comebacks sound edgy and cool and you keep failing. Kind of like Linux! LOSER!
Think Different. Think BETTER. Think Apple!
Like I said, slashdot emails me when I get a response to my logged-in comment, so it's easy for me to click on the link and reply. I don't have to spend time checking back on all my responses - if someone replies, slashdot lets me know!
Hopefully one day you'll discover the convenience of logging in and replying by clicking on an email link!
It looks like you haven't quite mastered it yet. Keep trying! You'll get it eventually! One day you'll make us proud!
Just more crap mail, and lots of trolls that mod you down just because they didn't like the comment someone gave. It's simply stupid to log in on slashdot.
The TV can be working just fine (ie, it could receive live OTA TV if you hooked up an antenna or dish) but if you don't use that function of it, you don't need to pay for a TV licence.
You don't need a special "non working" TV - a normal working one is fine.
Nice "comeback". I notice you didn't disagree with anything I said though. Very telling.
Think different. Think BETTER. Think Apple!
You forgot to log in kid.
As for "not disagreeing" with what you said, I didn't think it was necessary since you're obviously trolling.
For the record, I think Open Source is great and use many different open source programs from a number of different sources. I also run Linux one one of my machines, so I wouldn't want Linux developers to "give up". I certainly don't think Linux developers are "dipshits" - at least, not all of them (I don't know them all personally).
As far as "thinking better", there are some things I think Apple does better than other companies, and some things I think it does much worse, and your attempt to create a binary position where only one company has the "right way" is hilariously childish.
The only telling thing about this exchange is that you're clearly following the conversation, despite not being logged in so you must be actively checking back for responses to your AC trolling. That's... a little pathetic.
If you log in, then slashdot will send you an email when someone replies to your comment - it's really convenient! You should try it sometime.
Catalysis, gas storage, filtering, scaffolds for molecular construction etc.
Extremely high surface area materials are already extensively used in chemistry for this sort of thing.
Why was it a stupid move?

yea your paying 1000$ extra for a slower machine than the walmart box
not all of us are looking for the prettiest computer, the nicest tennis shoes and the blingiest bling
It seems you're not looking for correct grammar either it seems.
Maybe if you paid a bit more for your computer it would have a working grammar checker.

Wow, even your percentages are bigger than ours!
I'll take that with a "medium" 40 oz soda please.
