Advertisers have done this forever, they just didn't use MRIs. Consumer product testing isn't anything new, and essentially all their doing is consumer product testing with a new tool.
The advertising is still the same, they're just have better debugging tools.
Seems to me all you need is one manufacturer to refuse to build in the DRM and the Free Market should take care of the rest. Who would buy a crippled PC?
