  1. Re: Asperger's on Building Social Skills in Gifted Youths? · · Score: 1
Why do geeks, who can look up anything on Google, have no idea what Asperger's Syndrome is? They seem to think that it is some sort of light preference away from social skills.

If anyone is interested in an account of Asperger's, Mark Haddon's novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" is well worth a read. Winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year award earlier this year and available from all good bookshops...

  2. Re:Good on Cracking Down on MP3s at the Office · · Score: 1
Just like you shouldn't be playing Flash games at the office either. Quit stealing time from your employer and start working.

Rubbish. I'm an employer and I don't give a damn if my staff play Flash games. I'd be annoyed if they didn't get their work done, but on the whole, that doesn't happen.

Playing games/surfing the web/reading news etc. on company time is *not* stealing from your employer. Not doing the work you are paid for is.

On the whole I find that working in an environment where people are anal about how you spend every minute of the day lowers productivity. If spending some time each day on non-work-related activities makes the work-related activities go more smoothly then surely that's a good thing - or am I missing something here?

Same goes for MP3s. If people started trading pirated music on my network, I'd be unhappy about it, but otherwise I don't see a problem. If bandwidth was an issue, I'd just encourage them to find a workaround - like burning stuff to CD.

Not true. I've been developing Java applications extensively using JBuilder under Windows 95 & 98 ever since JBuilder 1 first came out and have had no problems with it.

  4. Re:Belkin OmniCube 4-port on Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) Switches · · Score: 1

I've got a 2-port OmniCube at home to switch between my Linux and Win98 machines and it works very well.

When I first installed it, I had a Microsoft IntelliMouse (with wheel) and had no problems. I recently bought the new Microsoft mouse (the one with the LEDs and no ball), but that appears to sometimes get upset when switching between systems. Under Linux, I sometimes have to restart X to get the mouse functioning again, and I've had to reboot Win98 to get that behaving properly.

I've got around this by plugging the new mouse directly into my Windows machine and put an old Logitech mouse into my Linux box. I'm just using the OmniCube for the monitor and keyboard.

This works quite well - afer all, the mice themselves don't take up too much desk space, I simply push the other out of the way when I'm using one. I do sometimes grab hold of the wrong mouse and wonder why nothing is happening...
