I remember doing something similar about 15 years ago at home.
Take an old calculator apart, and remove the polarization layer (it looks like a thin sheet of clear plastic over the top of the display).
Just hold the filter in front of your eyes to see the digits on the calculator.
Voila, you now have a super-secret calculator that you check how badly your 401k is tanking.
