  1. There's Zenith 3 ft away from me...and it works! on Low-end Laptops? · · Score: 1

I've got a zenith zwl 183-92 sitting on the desk on my shelf. My highschool drama teacher gave it to me (he wrote his master thesis on it sometime in the late 80's). It's a 4 MHz monster with 10 megs of disk space and a 720K floppy drive. I had intentions of trying to get it onto my university's network, but I've no idea how to go about doing that - anyone have an external NIC that can plug into a paralell port...I thought not.

The major kickass thing about it is that I learned how to use edlin!

The battery lasts 15 minutes on an 8 hour charge - now there's efficiency for you!

The above is the relevant portion of Turnitin.com's usage policy. "Licensor is the owner of, or has the rights to distribute...the forms generated by the Licensed Programs or Services." I set up a 'free trial account.' Essays are entered into forms, therefore the licensor (turnitin) is the owner of any essay put into a form.

My university uses this, and I will bring this to the attention of my prof.

    Quote regarding accuracy:

Hmm, usually when I pay for something, I want it to satisfy my requirements...

  3. Role-playing on Can You Suggest Any Non-Zero Sum Games? · · Score: 1
Storyteller based role-playing (whether using a system of rules or not) is about working together as a group to reach a goal - the telling of an interesting story. If you do not work with the other players, it is difficult to get anywhere. Often, the characters may be working against each other, but the players are participating in a group improvisational story that grows and expands with the players.

My personal favourite is Mage: The Ascension at white-wolf.com, but all a system is is a framework within which to build the group's creativity.

The difference is I do use linux, and I do enjoy, no , it isn't the friendly DOS I grew up with, but I rather enjoy it. This Pliant think intrigues me, and I think I'll give it a try. Innovation and trying things that haven't been done before bring out new and interesting products. It is vital to all research and advancement that pure research be done for it's own sake - because it is cool.

  5. Slashdotters reactions to the election on Election Wrapping Up · · Score: 1

I have been watching the election results come in on cnn.com rather studiously, and plan to do so for wuite some time. The catch? I'm not an Amercan, nor do I live there.

Why am I interested? Being a Canadian, american policies and decisions affect my life enormously. Under Bush, Canada would probably do slightly better economically. However, a win for Bush would bolster Canada's Stockwell Day, a religious-right political leader for the Canadian Alliance, in our upcoming federal election. I am left-wing, and would not want to see anything like that getting into canada's legislature.

From the reactions of others that posted here, it would seem that almost everyone either doesn't care, or is so single-minded all they can say is "my penis won texas". These are not the reactions I expected on slashdot, where, usually, the debate is of a high level.

    I resent the suburb remark.

Anyways, under Canadian law there is a tariff on blank cassettes and recordable CDs that is supposed to cover SOCAN fees (Society of Canadai artists and something or other - they collect royalties) for any music you may put on there.
Understandably, some people don't find this to be quite right. What if I record my personal data onto a recordable CD? I'm paying for the music. What if I back up my VIC20 onto a cassette tape? I'm paying for the music.

I went to apple's site and was intrigued by the fan-less cooling system; I expected some elaboration in the "tech specs" area. None was forthcoming. Do they run water over the processor? a coolant? Are there massive heat sinks in the 8^3 cube?

When I first heard about the Crusoe I went to their site and read interesting pdfs full of details, nothing detailed enough to give away the companies secrets, but it went right down to the basics so I could see what they are really doing. Transmeta is a cool company. Apple thinks that people don't want to know how stuff actually works. Apple isn't quite as cool anymore.

US Robotics was named after USR and MM, cool, I always thought it was just a coincidence. During the opening credits when "based on 'The Positronic Man' by Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverburg" appeared on the screen I applauded.
The movie is touching and goes right to the heart of the themes behind the book, the essence of humanity. Although there are obviously differences, and the three laws aren't given the same importance so as to appeal more widely to the general public, it is, nevertheless, a solid interpretation of a masterwork.
The movie does intorduce new characters and plot elements and omits many old ones: these are done because of the difference between a visual medium and a verbal one. I congratulate the screenwriter for a job well done.
