their technological ideas do seem a bit optimistic. for example ). 'Photolithography tools for making state-of-the-art integrated circuits are good for making features only as small as a few hundred nanometers. By adapting these methods used in the semiconductor industry, however, Ferrari managed to create holes only a few nanometers wide.' adapt how? I thought the limits on the technology were wavelengths of radiation? are they turning out radioactive nannites?
For once i'm not being anti NT, I do know what I'm doing with NT boxes, I'm not booting into VGA mode, and I do have the correct (and latest drivers) unfortunately the comment about large Icons just got to me. what I really should do is delete the whole lot and start from fresh. but there's a lot of things on this machine that belong to someone else who is out of the country for 3 months, and I really don't want to lose it and I just don't have time to sort it out. so they are stuck with sorting it when they get back
I think that there's only one thing to do. what with all the CCTV cameras in the UK. we all need to go out and look suspicious at the same time. they'le then have the problem of separating out the troublemakers, those on the splendidly named 'care in the community' scheme and the rich but eccentric. should be easy to overload the system. if nothing else they'll be so busy chasing the suspicious looking, they won't have time to deal with people who are acting in a libertarian manner.
We don't have CD-rom's on our public machines. it would still be possible to download drivers and use a backpack drive via a serial port to put the tools on that are necessary to crack our systems, but you'd have to get the drivers on via a locked floppy port
If as everyone says there is no merit in Amazon's case. Then the injunction must be the aim of the suit. and so having recieved it countersuit, claiming that as the technology that amazon are using is so obvious. then they are presenting a spurious case, which can only be intended to damage my buisness. get them charged with restraint of trade, use the department of justice against them. stop them setting up a Microsoft style monopoly of simple shopping. after all it's going to be easier to do before they're in the overwhelming position.
We should not look at the idea of technology as dumbing down the young. what we are in fact seeing is events rolling along as they always have done. as the individual ages a new generation emerges which has a different set of priorities. Have we been dumbed down because we use computers to work lathes rather than understand the precise way a spiral is formed whilst cutting metal rods. In some ways it could be argued that we have a much deeper knowledge of the way that the cutting operation is constructed.
There will always be people arguing for the pushing forwards of technology, and there will always be people who argue that it is going to far. we have to listen to both sides because sometimes the people who fear the new are right. after all if I said that I feared the possibility of universal servailance maid possible by computers and sattelites, I would not have people beating down my door and calling me a Luddite.
O.K. if it just means that I have to go to prison at some point in my life, then fair enough. let me say here and now that any government has no right to demand my passwords or post anything on my machines. I will supply them with my passwords on the day that they aggree to hand to me all of theirs and a copy of all their messages. One of the main arguments that they employ is the idea that they are trustworthy and that we only have anything to fear if we are doing something wrong. Even if they are trustworthy, then I still could not accept this law as the law would still be in place when the opposition are in place and even the government will tell you that they aren't trustworty. The Australian law should be resisted in every way possible. if for no other reason that it makes all computer based evidence in court untennable. any computer fraudster can now claim that 'it wasn't me it was the government'
Here in the UK we saw a similar approach over Pirate videos. there were two arguments put forward by the industry spokesmen. firstly that you might be buying disney films taped over porn films. but the second argument was that it was subsidising the sale of drugs to schoolchildren. now I don't know about you but I hardly think that the sale of drugs is going to wither and die without the financial imput of pirate videos. they seem to be attempting the same thing here.
The idea that this type of man beats up women because they are overflowing with testosterone was proved wrong a couple of years ago. Scientists from Oxford university made a study of testosterone levels in males. They found that the 'Lad / Jock ' archetype acts in that way because he has too little testosterone. So whenever you see one now you know that if they act in that way then they can't get it up!
If I remember rightly, he dosen't advocate forcing this to happen, he just advocates giving people the choice. Till you've been in this situation you can spout all the theory that you want, but actually being put in this position, where you have to make the decision wether a loved ones life support should be maintained for example is an entirely different situation. In the UK where the cost of this level of care is generally not an issue we have maybe a purer representation of the problem. in countries with a less well developedsocial health system you need stronger ethical rules because an incurably ill person is Haemoraging funds from the family into the pockets of doctors. thus there is much moore incentive for the individual to quietly get the sick relative Eusthanatized.
When he says "ALL of the content AND the backups made are either destroyed, being destroyed now, or will be before I can do anything to prevent it." how often does Harvard back up it's system? surely those tapes are not going to be reused for a couple of days if not weeks, if they follow any of the pretty standard procedures that are used by system managers. are they going to want to risk the chance of loosing ther backups of other things on that machine? which they will have to destroy as well?
if there's anyone else with stuff on the same server they could demand that Harvard not destroy their backups and so preserve those tapes.

My work NT box has icons that big, but only 'cos it won't change out of 640*480 and 16 colour
Perhaps he needs looking at, he seems to be showing signs of anxiety about Americans

Sort of like people do with television?

makes me laugh every time I see one.
