The sport of combat robots is growing quickly, yet quietly. Three years ago, BattleBots didn't even have a TV contract.
Now, there are several private, local tournaments held semi-annually, thousands of robots in weight classes ranging from 1 lb to 400 lbs, Toys, Video Games, and even competing shows such as Robot Wars, Depth Charge, and the recently cancelled Robotica, which was pretty boring.
Some may see this as the end of BattleBots, but I beleive it is simply part of a transition from the wrong TV network (Comedy Central) to one that will present the event properly, as a incredible mechanized competition. This could be TLC, Tech TV, or even a cable sports network that could present it in a NHRA-type of broadcast.
For those who are bored with it, take the time to find a live event near you and you will understand how amazing the sport (competition) of robotic combat is.
It can be considered a sport because it is a great competition, which is really why we watch sports. BattleBots is very real and very structured with a single-elimination format.
Granted, it isn't an athletic sport, but if you thinkg auto racing, horse racing, golf and bowling are sports, BattleBots is as well, and much more exciting to watch. Plus, from a viewers perspective, it looks EXACTLY like a sport. It is just as likely to end up on Fox Sports Net as it is TLC.
