  1. Lovely ideea, but... on Specialized Knoppixes for Fun and Profit · · Score: 3, Interesting
Putting specialised linux on a CD is fine... but why not go the whole nine yards? Put everything you need on a USB drive and boot from there! I'm sure you don't need the entire 650/730 MB for that application... Ways to upgrade the ideea: you can use the USB drive the size you need; you can writeprotect it, you can customize it.

Even more, MAYBE you can boot on a Virtual Machine and not need to restart... The only limitation here would be bootup time.

How can one say such a thing? Macs are for people willing to spend extra money, for people who appreciate design and ease of use, for people who want to have a certain touch of uniqueness.

On the other hand, Linux is for poeple who don't give a damn about the looks of their machines, for the people who aren't afraid to search the net about ten hours for the piece of code they need, and will read the docs and compile for about ten more hours. Oh, yeah, and for people with a certain cash affection.

Oh, so you said desktop boxen! So? Check the prices: same machine, same capabilities: one computer, one operating system, one office package. Which is cheaper?

However, gimme a Powerbook running Linux and I'll change my mind :)

On a different level: applications. Industry uses Photoshop; industry uses Macromedia stuff, industry uses specific software which runs on more standardised systems, such as MacOS or Windows. When Photoshop and Dreamweaver and Flash and QuarkXpress, and all the software that equipment get deliverd with will work on Linux, TOO, than you can speak of a choice. Till then, you need to be extra carefull when you shop, because you new laser printer might not work on linux (been there, bought that).

Yeah, I really feel I am gonna throw 3+ grands on that plastic brick... C'mon! When I want to play, I have my desktop, and, well, 5.1 sound is pretty cool to have around you, not to mention the CRT. If I want portability, there goes my 256 MB USB. If I want portability AND processing power, a regular (as in cheap) priced laptop will do. If I want to pick a chick, some wine and smooth talk will do. Pardon me for mentioning chicks on /.! If I want a LAN party - dammit, I have cable access. I don't have to haul 30 kg of computer, monitor and accesories around. Nor a 9 pound plastic brick that definitely will need a CRT, keyboard and mouse for an as close to enjoyable as possible experience.

Not to mention the other issues: battery life, heat dissipation, and the fact that the difference between 3+ grands and a cloud of smoke is only a spilled beverage. Upgrades! God in heavens, how do you upgrade such a thing? Selling it? are you kidding? Who's gonna buy that in 6 months? And for what amount?

Step 2: Now that you have a base, find a more efficient way to get off the Earth.

Step 3. Now that we know you can build a self-sustaining base, slingshot to any planet you want - but start from the moon. Less gravity, Einstein.

Yeah, sure, while you are doing steps 1-3, you can send all the probes you want, as long as they don't dry up your bugdet.

Now, WE (earth inhabitants) have shit: no orbital base, no moon base, no efficient way to escape from the gravity well, no proof that we can build a base/colony. AND we want Hubble down.
