I never liked that translation, "bread and games" or "food and entertainment" would both be better translations. "Circus" has a specific meaning in modern English that's nothing like the meaning intended here why not translate it along with the rest of the phrase?
both BT and Virgin's offerings are capped, throttled, very expensive, or some combination of the above
Exactly, I've got Virgin Broadband at home and they throttle the hell out of me (I'm a torrenter). I went to stay with a friend for a month recently and BT told him he was going to exceed their "fair use policy" on a supposedly "unlimited" deal.
So why pay for the extra bandwidth if you're not allowed to use it.
If you think those substitutions make any difference to the morality of the situations then you are a perfect example of how corrupting religious belief can be.
People who haven't been twisted by religion don't consider child sacrifice morally acceptable under any circumstances.
I pity you.
No we're definitely not past natural selection nor will we ever be. Currently natural selection is selecting people who live on welfare and do nothing but shag all day.
It's important we make arrangements to protect people with this sort of sensitivity from the radio transmissions which make them ill. We should declare Bouvet Island radio transmission free for 500 miles in every direction and encourage them to move there. We could provide a surface ship to supply provisions and carry mail - perhaps it could be scheduled to call once every six or twelve months. I'd be pleased to chip in towards the costs of providing such a supply ship.
Maybe it's got more to do with MS's long history of duplicity, lack of ethics and illegal business practices. Anybody who believes MS has suddenly become genuinely OS friendly is hopelessly naive. There's a long list of companies and individuals who've learnt the hard way - you can't trust MS - they screw over their business partners every time.
Really, can they seriously believe they're going to get useful feedback from Slashdot for an IDE that only works in Visual Studio? Take your crapware and shove it up your a**.
The rotors would add gyroscopic stability to the thing in the same way as the wheels on a bicycle make it easier to keep upright when moving. It could well be enough stabilisation to make riding this no more difficult of a balancing act than cycling - depending of course on the weight of the rotors, etc.
Virgin Media are an appalingly bad company to do business with, they seem to see customers as victims for them to rip off at every opportunity. They lie without conscience or remorse whenever it suits them. Never do business with Virgin Media or at least read the small print VERY carefully and if you think to yourself - well that means they "could" do x but they never would, think again.
Same here, ABP, noscript and flashblock are essential plugins. Ironically slashdot keep offering me ad free as some kind of perk but I don't see the ads anyway, almost makes me feel guilty - almost.
I said "probably" because I don't know, but purely speculatively, US assets might include some or all of the following:
US official reserve assets, Gold, Foreign Currency, Securities, Bond, Corporate Stocks, Physical Assets (Buildings, Land, Motor Vehicles, Storage Facilities), and probably a load of stuff I haven't thought of.
Not that I'd be surprised if US Gov assets in PRC don't total 2.8 billion but . . . probably.
And there's probably at least 2.3b worth of US government assets on PRC soil that could be seized without a judgement.
Sounds like PRC quite correctly take the view that US courts have no jurisdiction over what happens in another country and can go screw themselves. Go China! I only wish my government had a similar attitude.
You're right, but I like "(old)" books - there's maybe one book every two or three years on the best seller list that's worth reading the rest is total crap I wouldn't pay a penny for. Especially when most of the really great books are "out-of-copyright". There's a lifetimes worth of top quality reading already on Project Gutenberg without touching anything under copyright.
Just in case you hadn't realised - the bible is full of shit and there's no evidence whatsoever that the jews were ever slaves in Egypt, spent 40 years wandering the Sinai, etc.
Not all stereotypes are without foundation: I can confirm from personal experience that Germans tend to be punctual and expect the same of others, Finns tend to be hard drinkers and tough as old boots and, for what it's worth, never go drinking with Icelanders.
In the UK it's the British National Party (quazi Nazis), membership of this party precludes you from employment in the government, police, etc. Vile as they may be, they are a legitimate political party and legalising discrimination against them is even more vile, as well as the most dangerous precedent imaginable. Unfortunately this policy is actually quite popular in the UK - the sheeple will get what they deserve in the end I guess.
you can legally sell your body for sex, but it is illegal to advertise
It's the same in almost every country - the problem is, this is basically the way nearly all women relate to men (there's a reason they call marriage a "contract"). At one level or another just about any woman you sleep with will expect some kind of return. Yes you may occasionally find a woman that just wants a quick one night stand but it's rare. They can't help it - it's genetically pre-programmed into women to be gold-digging bitches and trying to legislate against that would be an exercise in futility.
Scotland seeing itself as a seperate country under occupation.
Somewhat of an odd position to take since the Act of Union was voted in by the Scottish Parliament and was an entirely voluntary arrangement. Of course as is typical of relations between Scotland and England this act was basically about bailing Scotland out of the fiscal creek they'd gotten themselves into - a pattern which continues to this day. Scots of course will claim that they've been ripped off on oil revenue recently, forgetting that a large proportion of the North Sea Oil Reserve was actually in the area which (under international maritime law) would have belonged to England anyway. In fact a few years ago The Economist magazine actually crunched the numbers and found that even at the height of the oil boom England was still bailing out Scotland to the tune of about £19 billion per year
Not that I have a problem with Scotland being part of the UK (or not for that matter) - I just wish they'd stop whingeing about how hard done by they are while grabbing the money with both hands. Really, if you don't like it then leave the rest of us don't need the drain on our rescources.
I'm an atheist myself but I've got to disagree with this - there's nothing wrong with the phrase "The problem with atheists is... "
Repeat after me: "Generalization is flawed thinking only when applied to individuals".
I can say "this batch of lightbulbs have shorter lifespans than that batch of lightbulbs" even if there are individual lightbulbs in the inferior batch which have longer lifespans than individual lightbulbs in the superior batch. It's not faulty thinking at all and the same logic applies to groups of people whether politically correct tossers like it or not.
If someone was to say "The problem with atheists is they don't believe in god" then I might not agree it's a problem but there's no logical flaw in the statement.

Yes we do - at least in theory, the US basically got it's legal system from England (sorry about that).

You can't get 100% but you can take your laptop down to Starbucks and spoof the MAC to cooe close.

we had no issues - that I knew of
Fixed that for you.

You are aware that fuel efficiency for most road cars is actually higher at lower speeds, right?
Wrong, most modern cars have a peak fuel efficiency somewhere between 25 and 40 mph - at lower speeds they are less efficient, right?
The fact it reduced casualties was an unexpected bonus
Was it? So how do you explain the Montana Paradox (http://www.motorists.org/pressreleases/home/montana-no-speed-limit-safety-paradox/)?

it desperately asks for an answer
So, begs the answer surely?

What's this guys point? It's always been a disaster so why try to fix it? Or does he have something constructive to say that I've missed?
