The format of books (a physical object that can be held easily and contains good reading content) is a widely accepted and well liked UI. It is no wonder that eBooks are and will continue to get more and more popular.
This is definitely the wave of the future. People will be sipping on their coffee and reading the news on their eReaders.
Personally, I think this format will suffer if we were to try to add too many other more features to it other than book and news material. It wouldn't be a good idea to compete with portable handheld devices (like phones and cameras, etc).
