Has Tivo gotten worse? I had one of the original ones and I loved it. Since then I've had DVR's from Comcast (mediocre), Time Warner (the worst by far), Dish (mediocre), AT&T Uverse (ok), and now DirecTV (ok). It's been 10 years since I had a Tivo so I may only be remembering the good parts, but it seemed better than anything else since, which is pathetic.

All of them are painfully underpowered. Scrolling through the guide is always waaaay too slow. What really sucks is that the cable companies usually only offer a single model of DVR. I would gladly pay a higher fee to have a lightning fast DVR.

Actually, there are quite a few places in the US that do the iron ring ceremony. And the rings I've seen are stainless steel. Do they still have iron rings?

Terms and titles aren't strictly enforced at all in the US or Canada. I can go online and buy a PhD in History this afternoon and start calling myself doctor. It's just not from an accredited institution. If you look on Canadian job sites, there are plenty of "software engineer" listings and from what I could see, all use "engineer" incorrectly. Wikipedia has an interesting article on the situation.

If you are right, there are an awful lot of "drain doctors" (700,000 according to Google) who are in trouble.

The "you are allowed but you have no right" is the difference between permitted use and protected right. You can use copyrighted materials for commentary (permitted use) but that "right" isn't protected in that copyright holders are not required to make their content available for commentary (e.g. blu ray footage). Because of the DMCA, you can't even legally bypass digital locks to use the copyrighted material in protected ways.

  14. Re:Well. on Righthaven Adds Forum Posters To Copyright Suit · · Score: 3, Informative

I don't think anybody is saying a citizen has no rights, just that fair use is actually a defense and not a right.

You may be allowed to use portions of a copyrighted work to comment or report on that work, but it isn't your right. Copyright holders who use DRM to deny access to the work aren't obliged to provide access to allow fair use. If fair use was a right, there would be no problem breaking DRM schemes for fair use purposes and the DMCA would have been overturned years ago. Slowly, the defenders and proponents of fair use are chipping away at the DMCA and I'm hopeful that we will end up with a more balanced law soon.

Nobody is saying the copyright holders have an absolute monopoly. They don't and the law is clear on that. In the case referred to in the summary, an article was reproduced in its entirety. If the defendants had only reproduced excerpts their fair use claims would be stronger. I'm not saying their fair use claim is bogus, but I can understand how Righthaven thinks a line was crossed and they may win the case.

Calling fair use a law isn't really accurate. Fair use isn't a right. Rather it is a defense against infringement claims.

In fine Slashdot tradition, I haven't RTFA (yet), but Righthaven is likely saying their copyrighted materials weren't used in a way that would qualify as fair use.

Your phone may have been designed for mobile communications, but that isn't how people are using them. It turns out, people like having a computer in their pocket that can also make phone calls. People are texting, using Facebook, playing games, and Binging more than talking. If the phone can make it through the day on a single charge (and for most people, the current generation of phones can do this), then why not consider adding more cores. I think it becomes especially interesting if the second core is different from the first. It could end up saving power by doing in hardware what was previously done in software (think GPU's and 3d graphics).
