On my main Workstation, I still run Windows 98 SE. I haven't downloaded the 20MB.NET update from Windows Update. I run a heap of apps for Sound Recording/mixing, Web Development, 3D games etc. Nothing I run seemed to require the.NET platform. What actual highly used apps rely on it anyways? Seriously. Or is it "the future" of apps?
Serious question. How can one make an iMac running Mac OS 9.2 connect to a Windows network shared drive - without forking out loads of cash for Virtual PC or Dave? Just wanna know if I have missed something. All the Mac admins say I need either Virtual PC or Dave, both aren't cheap. Yet with my Linux (and my Windows box of course) box, SMB ain't a problem.
Why? Have the vulnerabilities all been fixed now? If not, then they need to be made public. This is a bad day if IE still has wide open vulnerabilitty to known attacks.
After all, if it's on 90%+ of computers, you're talking about n00bs running it.
Exactly. n00bs on Linux aren't usually logged in with administrator priviledges. In Windows XP most n00bs are. It's nothing to do with Elitism, just the default level of access.
Many (not all) Windows users are pc n00bs. They wouldn't have a clue about installing an OS or security. The OS often comes pre-installed on their machine, and together with "XP for Dummies" or similar, they figure out how to open a Word document.
On the otherhand, very many GNU/Linux installs for home use, are installed by the user. If the user is clever enough to get through the install process and admin GNU/Linux on his/her machine, then the chances of the user being stoopid enough to open an email attackment that sooo looks spammed and dodgy, is minimal. If not, then they deserve to have their system trashed.
Exactly. Windows users have too many priviledges unless logged into a domain with tight group policies.
As I understand it, in GNU/Linux a virus can do only minimal damage unless: a). you are logged in as root - stupid idea unless doing maintenance b). it attacks a vulnerability that you haven't patched - also stupid, as most dists are very quick to release security patches. c). it attacks your bios directly, and it's not write-protected.
I would think that even if everyone moved to GNU/Linux and the same amount of viruses attacked GNU/Linux instead of MS Windows, there is a big difference in what the viruses can do.
In Windows XP the default users are Administrators. Bad idea.
Valve will lose NO half life 2 sales because of this.
WRONG! Well, not necessarily true. The possibility exists that someone can use their code to make an even better game than HalfLife 2 itself. Falcon 4.0 ring any bells?
If people trying to decide whether to spend their $50 on this new game or HL2, which wins? The better game of course. For example, there have been many a game made with the Quake2 engine (legally though) that leaves Q2 for dead! Usually this happens after a games use by date, but in this case that code has been leaked for the release of the game.
People who go on about how people still have to buy the game to get the datafiles, obviously haven't played Enemy Territory. Although it is free (as in beer), they have created their own game and levels using the RTCW source code - legally though.
Why even need a scripting language to do this? Wy not compile a C/C++ app for each arch being released on? Wouldn't this be faster and have less bloat?
wrong. I don't want to restore to previous state, but initial state of a clean boot. Otherwise system could be restored with memory leaks and the aftermath of program crashes.
Ok, I am not trying to be a retard in asking this. I am curious.
Why the normal boot process, start-up many different services, wait, wait, wait, etc?
Why not take a memory dump/snapshot of system after the first boot and load that into memory mega fast at every boot? Boot time would be as quick as loading the image into RAM.
Or has this been done?
Are all these sounds GPL compatible license - or just 'royalty free'? Some sites allow people to submit wav files, but then you cannot guarantee that they haven't been pinched from somewhere else. Safest way is to 'borrow' from other GPL projects or create your own.

For the price of Dave I can build a cheap Linux box. A better alternative.

WHATISTHISCAPSLOCKKEYFOR?
It's for annoying the crap out of email recipients and newsgroup readers - of course.
When singing this, it sounds like a cheesy 60's song.
Yeah my Linux box does nothing when I press it. What's with that? Yet the obscure SysRq key works a treat. ;-)

Just my $0.02.
Or under iMac:
1). Insert CD into drive
2). Take iMac into tech support, so they can "extract" the cd that is now jammed in your computer.
typo:
make that "but in this case that code has been leaked before the release of the game"

Whatever happened to "it was on the internet, so it must be true"? :-)

Microsoft is angry why?
If more people know about the settlement, the more people will claim. This makes it easier for people to claim. MS pay out more.
As to be expected, why would anyone volunteer for this?

Welcome to slashdot. :-)
Here ya go. It seems that moderators have no sense of humor. This one was modded a troll.

Not that I'm condoning this behavior, but that's exactly what the record industry is encouraging...
uhh.. yes you are. Re-read your first statement.
Good point. They should stop refering to them as cd's. If they don't have the proper logo-thingamee-mabob on them, then they are not cds.
