I agree with you here. They feel proprietary crap is cheaper to use/implement than an OSS alternative. The fact of the matter is that standardization has made use/knowledege of the proprietary solutions more viable because more people are familiar with them. Until the standard is abolished, which grows closer and closer as more companies witness, first hand, the effective ness of OSS, we will be subject to FUD.
Actually come to think of it I bet you could graph the relationship between the two(familiarity and FUD) where as x (familiarity) decreases y (FUD)increases exponentally.
y = x^?
What could we use for the ? the number of companies satisfied with their switch to oss?
gah I lost coherency up there somewhere. Enjoy.
Cheers,
MenTaL
where have you read that distribution of recorded tv shows is illegal? Please link me. This is not sarcastic at all I am thouroughly interested on any articles about how the industry dealt legally with the advent of VHS recordings.
these bashers. I'm tired of the reference to dreamhack. Sure its big, its also in Sweden. Lets see how much is a plane ticket to sweden with your computer as well as hotels and everything? Its not a viable option for everyone. We also have a large numbers kids under 18. Fat chance one of them will make Dreamhack. I'm not dissing on dreamhack here i'm sure its a great time but i cannot afford to make the trip. I have an hour and a half drive and i have room to bring my own chair. Don't have to rent a hotel because I can bring an airmatress and sleep on the sidelines. Our venue has a shower so smell isn't really a problem. We aren't corprate whores, all corporate talks and advertiseing is held in a Seperate room. Though the corporate integration is a positive thing. Prizes, game demos, and many other pluses have come of it. How many of you get to see a full athlon 64 system running ut2003 in 64 bits? Any hands? Didn't think so. As for the why lousiville kentucky posts, you may be surprised just how many lanners the midwest has. And the number of lanparties. Thereis one local attendee that has attened lanparties for 65 straight weekends. We also have an amazing case artist for you "little modders that can't" or who ever just wants a cool design. Seriously check him out @ www.humantree.org he is amazing.
In conslusion, all you l33t3sts thanks for your amazing commnets you sure owned us. To all others, it really is a great event that you should look into attending.
Ps. Cronies please don't come we don't want your negativity.
You have to remember we are probably a younger party. Burden(organizer) has a goal of 5000 people. And I remember him saying, in refernece to lantrocity which turned poeple away @ like 1500 people, I don't want to turn anyone away. Its mostly the atomsphere here that I return for. And meeting people from all over that I wouldn't normally.
I agree that the small party has many merits. However the larger lanparties aka lanwar( which isnot sponser held its held by a local lanner he pulls in sponsers but they do not run the show in any way and you aren't forced to see their advertising. You only go see it if you want to. Which I fully recomend as you can have many thought provoking questions arise.)
The size of lanwar draws many varied gamers. If you have 30 people in your basement or what ever and a couple guys get bored of playing your uberfavorite game CS then whats he do? Play a single player game? go online? all things you shouldnt' be doing at a lanparty. Here he can fire up a diff game. Maybe even something none of his other freinds like. It also ups the competition level. Tillerman came supposedly though i haven't seen him. Warcraft 3 allstar incase you didn't know. Playing against him for the people interested in that game is a unique experience and how many of you bring players of that calibuer? Also there are cheap parts on hand all night due to the local computer store sponsers. How often has that video or sound card crashed when you needed a replacement @ 4 in the morning? You can replace that here. Need some blank cd's ? Got that too. Finally fed up wiht 30 frams in ut2003? Ok. Then again you could potentially win a state of hte art system. The sponsers gave away 5 full systems (athlon 3200, corsair ddr, radeaon 9800, abit or dfi mobo, cases from directron, hd's from westerndigital and hitachi. We also get game demos that no one in the public sphere has seen. Like I said its a different level and shouldn't be of any less merit.
Yeah the crowd here tends to be a bit more into ati than nvidia. Thats probably because ati has been to like 3-4 of our events so far. Though we all treat Nvidia with the respect they deserve. Besides more free stuff;p

Thank you. It is our mission to become the biggest. (i'm merely an attendee but i feel like i am part of this party not just an attendee.)
