I believe this is actually what the military does, but replacing the 8 yr olds with 18+ year olds. Well, they don't release the software, but they network hundreds of these things together and train. The hardware and databases are very expensive, so releasing the software wouldn't be all that effective.
Maybe a limited release, low budget film, could do well targeting people like us. For example, I live in Utah and over the past couple of years there have been a few feature films released that are pretty much targeted at Mormons (God's Army, Singles Ward, Brigham City). This is a pretty small audience (6-7 million in the US). I think they spent a million or two on each of these, they all got into the major theaters, and probably made a million or two profit.
Maybe we could create an Open Source Screenplay Project, get $$$$exyGal to play the female lead, Cowboy Neal the male, Dave Barry as the director, and release it in San Jose, and the other high geek density population areas.
I'd also like to remind everyone that the difference between GWB getting the majority of the popular vote and not getting it, is withing the statistical variance of the polling system. When people state that GWB didn't get the majority of the popular vote, they are merely stating their ignorance of votes and how they're counted.
In criminal cases here in the US, the suspects are thrown in prison and bail is set. If paid, the suspect will be free until a verdict is reached and the money will be returned at that time. When determining the bail, the courts take into account the seriousness of the crime, the likelihood that the suspect will flee, and the likelihood that he will hurt society in some way if he is released (and probably their political party, personal relationship with powerful politicians, etc.).
Wouldn't it be cool if the EU could set bail in the amount of cash MS has in the bank plus the value of all of Billy Boy's stock in the company? I'd hate to have anyone do that to me, but it'd be cool if it happened to them...
I work in an industry that is closely related to gaming and have a few friends working in the gaming industry. The vast increases in game complexity that have come in the last several years have created a problem. Where a game could be developed by enthusiastic youth with little discipline and education in the past, it is now a large project that requires the coordination of a large development team that crosses several disciplines. No longer can a few enthusiastic kids with a lot of experience playing games and some experience programming and a little artistic ability get the job done. With 15 of these guys programming the same game, rarely is there a build that works because they are always stepping on each other's code. Configuration management is unheard of. Frequently, months of development are lost because one of these kids who has become a project manager hears about a "cool new kick ass" algorithm that "we just gotta" use. These things combined result in endless working hours and a very stressful environment.
IMO, the industry is just messed up in a different way than academia. The industry needs more people with discipline, the kind that gets you through a challenging college degree. Academia needs to teach more practical application development. If either academia or industry can get their act together, some cool things will happen.
Don't the phone companies already have pretty good control over internet access? Dial-up through the phone lines, DSL kind of goes through there too, and the cable companies are either phone companies or closely related to them. Once the phone companies lose the revenue stream from over charging us for phone access, they'll just charge us more for internet access. Well, I guess they'll do that either way.
If this price information was only available to employees who had signed an NDA, then someone broke the NDA to leak the prices. If it is clear that an NDA was broken, couldn't Walmart bring a case against a John Doe then subpoena the identity from FatWallet without broaching any copyright law or the DMCA?
All of this is based on the assumption that Walmart was duly diligent in keeping their secrets by having NDAs.

Is this a suggestion that Arsuaga could have written about the neanderthals in the 1st person?
Can't sign yourself into slavery? Have you seen a "confidentiality and invention agreement" in the tech industry lately? Maybe we can get those nullified by that anti-slavery amendment...
Why is it that I always get managers who approach problems in this same way?

What exactly is an "orker" and what does he do to a cow?

My wife decided to start using this management-speak at home after some Franklin-Craven training at work. She's my ex-wife now.

I'll answer that...

No, but the money he earns from this pro-bono work is tax-deductible.
