That comment is very insightful -- I wish I had mod points -- you desrve them but won't get them for bucking the mp3 party line. It's thought provoking too -- the notion that "downloading" isn't actually a transfer (like water through pipes) but merely a signal from one piece of hardware to a remote system that instructs the remote system to generate a copy. All the metaphors we use for the internet sort of break down against this reality that the copy is actually being made on the system "receiving" the data.
Sadly, people will continue to take risks and because they want to continue performing that risky activity, will go to great lengths to convince themselves they are safe.
By the same token, do you really want a record to exist linking you, your bank account, and illegal activity? If you are going to buy something that isn't legal (whether justly or unjustly), use cash (and if paranoid, never handle it with your bare hands / expose it residue containing your DNA etc. etc.).
It's probably lucky that Visa only received pressure. How about this scenario:
1. RIAA files John Doe Suits.
2. Send Subpoena to VISA demanding names for cards used to purchase allofmp3 credits.
3. Amend suit to reflect card owner's name.
4. Profit.
It's a problem with religious fundementalists of all types, who fundemntally wish people to remain ignorant and uneducated. In America you see fundementalist attacks on education and freedom. Completely illogical thinking like "gay marriage" violates the rights of religious fanatics. A belief that one's particular religious icon should be installed in court houses. Whatever. America needs to worry about the threat of hard-core religious freaks. And note, the type of religion is irrelevant. All fundementalists are budding terrorists whether christian or muslim.
"... I resemble that..." is a classic joke. Not sure if you are kidding or what. just google for "I resemble that" and you will see lots of examples of the joke. It works like this: Speaker is presumed dumb. Something negative about something in general is stated. Speaker says "hey -- I resemble that". The joke is that the speaker really meant "resent", but being so dumb used an incorrect word to unwittingly say something truthful (but something which he fails to recognize) about himself. The joke is essentially about self-delusion.
Infatuation has a blinding effect on people. It's only by the time she's sucking $8000/month alimony out of him that he takes a moment to fo the math and relizes that visiting Nevada every weekend would be cost less and be more fun.
I just tried this app on my macbook (not pro) and was surprised to find that I couldn't really hear a difference at 3000 rpm. The noise from the power supply when its plugged in, the HD, and whatever else is going on covers the fan noise.
Norway also has normal work weeks and they are evaluted as being happier than people in the US. Most people in Europe (i.e. UK, Norway) have far more vacation weeks than us (and use them) and they live quite well on average.
Norway has a quite a lot of oil/gas, a commodies which surely boost the country's prosperity level, ability to provide services, and the consequent contentment of its populace.
... Norway exports 90 per cent of its entire oil production.
Today Norway sits on approximately half of the remaining reserves of oil and gas in Europe. It covers 10 per cent of Europe's gas consumption and within a few years will increase gas exports dramatically and account for 30 per cent of European gas imports.
I'll admit it -- first time I tried to find youtube after _hearing_ about it from a friend, I went straight to "utube". Now, I'm no Einstein, but I don't drool on my shirt all day either.
That new user, by agreeing to the EULA, gets all the rights you had at first purchase, including that once-only hardware transfer.
Here's a hint. Read all the words of the quoted section, e.g., "The initial user...". Given the plain meaning of "initial", I think you'd be hard pressed in an argument that a subsequent user was also an initial user. IOW, the person you give/sell to probably has no right to effect a further transfer to some 3d person or back to you.
Just out of curriosity -- how many exploits for linux are there in which your machine can be rooted simply by viewing a website? How many such exploits have there been for windows? I honestly don't know the true answer but I'm betting there is a large difference between the frequency of this type of exploit with windows having the "high score" by a large margin. Please correct me if I'm wrong (with actual examples, not opinions).
If you know someone is a terrorist, by all means, get a warrant and listen in. What we're talking here is carte blanche to eavesdrop. Go that route, and we might as well invite a Pinochet to rule.
When they finally come for you, who will speak out?
In the distant future, when western civilization falls because people didn't want to get their hands dirty fighting to save it, who will speak out?
You sir, are an unwitting (I hope) instrument in the future fall of Western Civilization. What defines us IS our liberty. Take that away and we are nothing but another third world dictatorship with better cars.
Writing is good but even better is visiting. I visited my reps office a few days ago and let the staffer know I thought the warrentless search bill was really crazy. Granted, this isn't an option for everyone, but if you look into it, you might find the rep's office isn't too far from where you work. You can pick your rep here: http://www.house.gov/ and then look at "contact" for office locations. Letters are great, but a personal visit is probably even better... or at least more memorable. It shows you _really_ care.
Some people don't want the government itself to become an agent of terror within our borders. Sadly, most people seem happy to watch the latest episode of while every principle on which this nation was founded is discarded. Ten years from now: don't tick off your neighbors lest they report you to the authorities. While you rot in a secret prison, console yourself with the thought that at least everyone else is safer from terrorism and America is still "free".
I've been trying to figure out how many seats the Rs have to lose to make the vote come out right. Assuming that Republicans and Democrats follow similar voting patterns in the future, and ignoring independents, my spreadsheet says this bill first comes out negative at 211 R, and 220 D. I don't know if I calculated correctly though -- I'm not great at math. Here is how I set up my spreadsheet:
row 1: 230, 13, b1/a1, 201, 18, e1/d1
rest: a1-1, a2*$c$1, BLANK, d1+1, d2*$f$1, BLANK, (a2+e2)-(b2+d2)
fill down from there
Anyway, I'd be interested in numbers from someone who knows what they're doing.
A recent Sony product I actually want??
That's unpossible!
I was thinking the same thing... then I looked at the specs:
System Requirements
Operating System: Windows® XP (Home Edition/Professional, Media Center Edition, Media Center Edition 2004, Media Center Edition 2005)

you realize he won an ig-nobel prize. It's the booby prize of science.
Unfair mod. Should be +5 fucking brilliant.
Now, if we can just herf all those thumpmobiles
You would have the terrorists succede by turning us into a police state.
If you know someone is a terrorist, by all means, get a warrant and listen in. What we're talking here is carte blanche to eavesdrop. Go that route, and we might as well invite a Pinochet to rule.
So you want to prevent "Patriot Acts" by advocating for even more onerous laws? That's some kind of fucked up logic.
