I had Comcast cable internet installed back in February, and closely monitored what the cable guy was doing on my computer (running WinXP). All he did was check my network settings to make sure they were okay, and then he brought up Internet Explorer to test the connection. He didn't install any software at all.
However, I'm not surprised Comcast would be trying to collect advertising demographics, because the on-screen displays on my expensive digital cable are full of ads. Plus, Comcast is known for screwing over their cable Internet customers, particularly ones using NAT boxes.
