  1. MSNBC Front Page on Shawn Fanning Interview · · Score: 3, Funny

I like how MSNBC had the story title on their tech front page:

    "Napster Boy, Interrupted"

Man that would piss me off if I was him and people are still calling me "Napster Boy".

("Hey, Napster Boy, why don't you go download me some mp3's?! Ha ha ha ha! Did you hear that, fellas? I just called Fanny Napster boy! ha ha ha!")

The problem that arises with books like this is that they become obsolete quickly. More generic hackerish books just describe generalisms and may discuss buffer overflows in general rather than specific buffer overflows in specific programs.

There is a need for both types of books, but one like this will not be good reading 10 years from now (nor should they be).

Nice troll. I especially like the "Richard Stallson" spelling. Added a bit of humor, and might even provoke more biters to nitpick and correct the spelling.

    My other favorite line:

Wouldn't it be more useful for the entire open source community to rally around Linux?

The open source community hates conformity. This is sure to rile some people up! Good work!

I agree. I installed mplayer a couple of months ago, and it wasn't for beginners. There are quite a few dependencies that need to be met, and I know a newbie couldn't handle it very well.

But, mplayer is a fabulous product, no doubt about it.

Did you install the sharing stuff/server packages when you installed? That might be part of the problem.

I installed Mandrake 9 a couple of days ago and I thought it was pretty easy with mebmin installed, but I am not a newB. I could understand that it could be difficult for someone new to linux.

If you didn't install webmin, do that. It can make samba setup really easy if mandrake doesn't have a tool to do it for you. As far as browsing a windows network, can't help you there because I don't have any windows machines, just linux and OS X (and with them I just use NFS to share).

As long as it's just an option, then I'm okay with it. I just don't want to be forced to have a trash can. When I delete things, I want them gone and not taking up space. If I am not sure if they can be deleted, then I will just mv them to a temp. location or not delete them.

Funnily enough, Linux costs more than Windows because none of the regular pirates stock Linux. So Win2K is US$ 2.15 but Redhat is about US$15 which is what the cheapest unoficial Redhat CD costs

    Are you sure?

Granted, this is mostly US, but CD-Rs are just as cheap everywhere in the world.

Yes, but at least crack makes one feel good for a while. Operating systems just never gave me that jolt that a good dose of crack does in the morning.
