In 2007 there were roughly 2500 road deaths in the UK. During that same period 2000 souls were lost to terrorism WORLD WIDE.

Simply because you trust the current administration, do not go making assumptions about the future use of this technology. After all could you please answer one question:
Who voted for Mr Brown as Prime Minister ?
The next time this happens who know WHAT we might end up with ?
We (I am British) have had domestic terrorism experience first hand over a prolonged number of years. I lived though some of them. During that time the "security services" in the name of the people, committed some outrageous acts.
These scanners have three well known weaknesses:
1. By Law under 18's cannot be scanned.
2. The cannot detect internally inserted explosives.
3. There are explosive components that are invisible to the technology.

Never before in our history have we ever been so scared by so small a risk.
Pre 9/11 hijacked passengers stood a fair chance of survival with both negotiations and advancements in our hostage rescue capabilities. As a traveler your safest course of action was to be passive.
Post 9/11 when hijacked you know you are going to die. Your safest course of action is to be aggressive. Terrorist should know that by hijacking a plane - all they do is create a plane full of people with NOTHING TO LOOSE and EVERYTHING TO GAIN.
At least if I were to die trying I would be the one to have chosen how and when I die not them!
Now imagine a plane load of people with the same f**k *** attitude....
More people die on Britain's roads each YEAR than have died as a result of terrorism in TOTAL.
Each and every day we take far greater risks with our lives that that posed by terrorism.
Thanks to accurate speed reading, I have no problems hitting over 45 wpm whilst watching my fingers do their work.
When they tried to force me to touch type in college, the best I could manage was 15 wpm.
Only when it was pointed out to them, that the requirement for my course did not actually specify "touch" typing was I permitted to return to my method which in turn allowed me to complete my course requirements with a top 10% mark.
So before you go ranting about making something mandatory - have some consideration for those whose results are the same, but whose methods are entirely different.
Ask a silly question -
If the $1.9M was paid - would his not mean that anyone who downloaded the named tracks during the time period (the damage the $1.9M is expected to cover) could have a claim that payment has already been made and thus not be liable ?
"Doesn't really matter how much ram you have, long before you get a Gig of swap utilized the system is going to be trashing to the point of being unusable under any but lab conditions."
Err - ok that must make me a lab.
Machine Spec - e2140 with 2Gb ram - 10Gb swap (just in case).
I see 2-3 Gb of swap in use and 1.3 - 1.8 Gb of ram in use.
My machine still flies despite circa 150 pages open in firefox 2-3 instances of monodevelop 2-4 of vlc and 3 virtual machines.
Just because I am using 2-3 GB or swap does not mean that it is all in constant use - thats the point of swap.
While I reference one "block" of say 10 pages in firefox the remaining 140 are probably paged out and are only read from disk when I select them.
I will admit that my machine occasionally "pauses for thought" when I select something that has been paged, but this seems to have little to no effect on any application other than the one I am "activating" and is typically no more than 2 seconds.
Trashing / swap thrashing is a sign of too little physical ram and a system that is being FORCED to page ACTIVE sections of ram in order to fulfill the demands placed on it.
With todays multi-gigabyte machines this is FAR less common.
If you take into consideration the "implementation" of moonlight and the developers "we are covered by Microsoft agreements and you are safe to get this code from us but no one else" attitude (I could quote a certain lead developers words if need be). Then these are not unreasonable concerns.
For example.
There is currently no free fully functioning implementation of Microsoft's Silverlight.
You can get a *working* implementation through Novell, however there are certain parts that remain Microsoft's.
You can get a *free* implementation, this however, is not fully compatible.
Hopefully this "We're alright we signed with Microsoft" is the beginning of the end for these projects are more and more developers realise that any code contributed can only safely be re-released by entity who "signed with Microsoft".
Projects to be wary of include but are not limited to:-
Moonlight (any non free implementation) Mono (any non free extensions and now possibly including System.Windows)
Under question:-
Monodevelop (seems to now be a Novell project how did that happen??)
With this commercial drift developers are now more than ever entitled to be concerned over what patents / intellectual property that are using.
As I read it, the simplest way to avoid this tax is :
1) Switch to an open source license.
2) Do not charge for the code.
3) Charge only the time and effort in installation and configuration.
4) Profit !
All in all this may be cheaper than relocating for some companies.
Even better in your own words:-
(2) they get a court order, in which case they will be accompanied by a police officer who will say that they have such an order, offer you the chance to read it, and advise you of your legal rights together with the penalties for not complying with the order. It's a good idea to admit them at this point, not only because the penalties for not doing so are severe, but also due to the fact that the policeman is a neutral party who will ensure that the TVL employee doesn't get overzealous in his searches (strict rules govern what they can search for, where they search for it, and how the searches may performed. They cannot for example look under or in mattresses, tear up floors, turn out drawers and cupboards or rifle through stuff that's in them, move heavy furniture around, or damage any of your property).
The spot fine is a direct and immediate result of the presumption of guilt you will have been warned and notified in advance that entry in required - you have refused an appointed officer the chance to inspect your equipment to prove licensed within the law - an opportunity granted to you by the law. Therefore you are guilty and are responsible for the fine.
You can later challenge this in court, but it is however most certainly A CRIMINAL OFFENSE. Complete with police persons.
As the person refusing access YOU are responsible for YOUR part in the law being broken and are therefore equally culpable under the law.
Mistake #1 you opened the door - they can spot fine you for not co-operating - worse still if it's not your house YOU opened the door and it's YOU who has to pay or go to court.
And the true costs of the preventions required.

Until the drunken idiot kills you.
Laughable - In order for a terrorist to achieve their goal they have to instill terror into their targets.
I refuse to be terrified of the minuscule chance of being blown up.

Yes things changed on 9/11...
We all became wimps as our leaders showed fear...
Where's the spirit of Winston when we need him ?
With slight regional variations - No difference what so ever excepting the name.
Indeed not a smart move.. It was however both thoughtful and selfless.
Thoughtless and selfish would have been to "black hat" it and sell his discoveries "underground".
Had he shut up we would never have know the current extent of the vulnerability.
In order to achieve this it would require the server to process encrypted data - without needing to know what that data is or even why it's doing it.
You send it encrypted data - it process it without decrypting it and returns the still encrypted result. Thus preserving your security.
As I understand it (from a slashdot article I now cannot find) IBM are working on this but there is as yet no solution.
