I am not sure about how socialists or communists make money, but I do not care, for I am a capitlist living in California. California has the 6th largest economy in the world. If you want to make money off of your idea, you need to patent it. If dont want others to make money off of your idea then patent it. If you want to be known for your idea, you can try to give it away, but you can also patent it and give it away. Anyways, I think the theme here is patent it.
