You may want to try out Lotus Symphony. Pretty much of the options are at the side, and you can move stuff around. It's free and based on OpenOffice, so there is no reason not to try it out. If you are really into typing, you might also want to get a screen with pivot function. I got to admit though that I hardly use my pivot function and that I expected more from it. It's just doesn't feel right for most applications, and you don't want to turn around your screen every few minutes. So, buying the next screen, I will not buy pivot, but bigger ;)

But is this really happening? I agree this might be an issue when forms of encryption etc. is used. But so far, most file sharing is happening more or less open, on torrent networks etc. On these network, one can actively see what is being shared. So, to use a real world analogy, you can see that someone takes your property. You just don't know who the person is. So what do you do? You go to the police and ask them to find out who has done it. Then they find you and after that you might face charges. You simply got no right to commmit crimes in private. Criminal laws are going in exactly where society decides that your action shoudn't be private any more, but a public affair.

I used to think like this guy, but I changed.

It's simply not ours to decide for what reason anyone should be in the business. If they are in it for the sake of art, so be it. If they are in it to earn a living and maybe, just maybe a family with kids, who are we to think they shouldn't be in it? Who are we to decide they should work for free? Who are we to slap away the only weapon they got in this digital age, and be it DRM?

If you have to work for a living, you just have to ask yourself on whether it's the right of the community to decide that you should be in it for free. Than ask the same question to the musician, artist, whatever. Same answer? I suppose.

And if you dare to answer different, that music and art should be free but your work should not be, all I got to say to you is that you can hardly say to value art the way you should do. Fortunately, society answers differently.

So be it. Why is it forbidden for other countries other than the US to be proud about something? They are not saying "We're better than you." All they are expressing is some justified pride.

The good side of patriotism, if you ask me.

Simply, I think that trying to sell someone something in a situation where they feel presured on buying something immeadetly is wrong. This uses the weakness of people who have difficulties with their finance management anyway.
We just take some data and use them for statistics and the statistics are never associated with the individual. You cannot tell this special person uses this and thinks this or that about Iraq. All you know later is that maybe (totally made up), 35% of men are against the war, and 60% of women, or that adults from 18-24 have a special interest in mobiles, while 60+ coudn't care less.
If you think this is wrong, fine, but I believe a modern economy doesn't work without it.

Ok, I'm doing the polls. Yes, I am some of those who kindly ask you to do that survey. Flame me now. All I can say to defend myself is that I don't do telemarketing at all and never will. Sometimes I ask myself on why so many people who refuse to do the survey stil agree with me that they watch survey results on TV. (e.g. which party would you vote for, what's your opinion about Iraq, where to you think healthcare should be going). I agree, in some situations we simply happen to call at the wrong time. I hang up myself as soon as I can in these cases. But mosttimes people are donwright unwilling or downright lying. In a more and more confusing world, surveys are a way of roughly knowing what others think, and, sure, to use it for your interests. The problem described is non existend here in Germany, I'm confused to hear you got to pay when you pick up your mobile. You only got to do that here if you are outside of Germany. Therefore this simply is a question on wether the institute is willing to pay the higher costs per call. Additionally, our computer also dials numbers not listed in the telephone book, to get better results (The numbers are autogenerated by a software), I don't know on wether this happens in the US. Also, at least over here, 18-24 is not the problematic group, even though it's not hte easiest either. I think easiest is somewhere round 30, than 18-24 and than, 60+. Male 60+ is espacially a desaster, try to get them to do the survey some time late afternoon. This is a job, earning me money to invest in my studies. I do not feel bad doing it, and I think it makes this world a bit more transparent and easy to understand. George

  7. It's comletly within their rights ... on Microsoft Introduces IM Licensing · · Score: 1

Ouh now I'm going to make myself unpopular. MS is providing the infrastructure for it's IM network. Just because we are used to get that "free" doesn't mean that MS has any obligation whatsoever to provide it. And the free part can also be questioned, because Windows buyers finance it, just like AOL users finance the AIM network. If MS, ICQ and AOL are giving away their clients for "free" they do so to increase their popularity, sympathy or whatever, but in the end they do it for business reasons. This is exactly like Winamp, if they decided to sell it again you may not like it, but it would be perfectly their right to. Gaim, Trillian and others are using this infrastructure without paying any usage fee to MS and MS doesn't reach their goals of increased popularity, sympathy and customer satisfaction with these clients. This goes especially for Gaim and other non Windows clients. So stop whining because someone asks for money for something they run and which costs them money.

  8. What this is about - and what not on German Constitutional Court Blocks Napster Suit · · Score: 5, Informative

To clear up some stuff, this ruling has very little or nothing to do with legality of P2P services. It is about the huge amount of sums companies have to pay others for doing things out of contract. In the US, comps have to pay huge amounts to individuals or other comps as a FINE for what they have been doing which exceeds the damage by far. This is not possible in Germany. You have to proof that there has been a DAMAGE for you, and you have this DAMAGE repaid only. Now, this is what you have to understand to understand the ruling. Below I will roughly translate what our constitutional court said : The country court in Duesseldorf is not allowed to hand in the charge against Bertelmann until further notice. The charge, handed in by Bertelsmann rivals EMI and Universal for 17 Million Dollars MIGHT be against fundamental basics of our justice system. To stop the charge being overhanded, this INTERIM order has been made. The very high amount to get money beyond your damages is not GENERALLY against our constitution. But if trials in front of german courts are misused in an obvious way to gather public attention and press coverage and the risk of being sentenced to make the opponent give in, this might break the german constituion. Wether this has been the case THIS TIME, if to be cleared in the MAIN TRIAL. If this question is answered yes, the charge is not allowed in germany and german courts can't deal with it. Bertelsmann sees itself endangered in it's by the constitution granted rights of possesion and freedom of occupation. Hope this clears it up a bit George

Yes, you are right. And, of course, going for darwinism/creationism is protected. Of course writing down facts is also protected (just not by article 5 but by some other paragraph I don't know right now). In general german government is quite liberal. The problem all societys face is, however, that tolerance cannot tolerate intolerance. I know, that's a paradoxon. George

  10. Opinion / Fact on EU Anti-Hate Laws On The Web · · Score: 2, Insightful

Being German, I have to be quite sensibel about subjects like this ... I study law, and paragraph 5 of our constitution tells us we got freedom of opinion, and to express it in word, writing, and whatever form there might be. Now, what's an opinion ? This question is vital, since it decides on what's protected and what's not. Now, try to define it. Quite tough, ehh? Now, the stantard definition we have is that opinion is something evaluating. This also makes clear what opinion is not: pure facts. Pure facts are not an opinion. Therefore, the statement of pure facts is not protected. If you say 1+3 = 5 that's not an opinion, it's downright wrong. So, what does this make this new EU thing. If you state some plain wrong "facts" about WWII, you are not protected, and I think that's quite understandable. The victims of wars simply don't deserve this. However, opinion has to be allowed, no matter what the subject might be. Maybe these are unconstitutional ? However, constitutional law can be restricted, if it conflicts with other constitutional law. So, if we say, that the dignity of man (article 1) is violated by this, dignity of man always comes first. We have to be carefull as hell, but I don't think anything is allowed to stand as an absolute, it has to go fine with other, not less important stuff. George
