  1. Re:Cisco Support on Blow-by-Blow Account of the OSDN Outage · · Score: 1

Cisco tech support, for me at least, has been nothing short of amazing. With any problem it takes a few moments after you call in to get someone on the line, and its 24/7 and anywhere in the world apparently. One night at 3AM, we called up cisco and talked to someone in Australia apparently. Cisco has an awesome VoIP telephony network that they use to handle all these calls. And Cisco is also willing to config whatever you neeed. Pity not all companies are like this :(

We are ignoring all "alternative-fuel" cars. Why? LOOK AT THEM! They are the ugliest cars in creation. The Audi A2 looks like a Ford Fungus (Focus). The Honda Prius looks like a turd. It seems that car makers want to make it obvious that the owner is a cheap-ass and doesnt want to pay for high price gas. Maybe make a electric car that looks like a NORMAL vehicle and we will buy it.

Tell me how TV stations are losing money.

    a) Compared to TVs in the nation, there aren't that many TiVo's at all.

    b) The advertisement will STILL play on that station at the specified time regardless of if you have TIVO. Having the TiVo just means you won't have to sit through it.

    c) Doesnt dumbass Dvorak know that there have been VCRs with this technology around for years, before the advent of the hard drive. And you can simply put this on your PC using any VCR and VideoIN on your VCR.

Maybe he thinks we should pay for our television.. wait a minute, most of us ALREADY DO (pay too much). Anyone that has Cable or Satellite is paying for their TV usage (albiet going to DirecTV or your local cable provider, they could kick some profit over too the stations.

I'm sorry but in my personal opinion, Mr. Dvorak i an old fart with old ideas. He says stuff that will piss people off just so people will actually read his boring column.

Move on Dvorak, you stupid old fart, move on..

  4. OSX for x86? Not going to happen... on OS X on x86? · · Score: 1

    Here is the lowdown:

    1. Apple will never make a full featured OSX for intel because:
    a) they are a hardware company more than anything. b) their sales would drop horribly. c) it wouldn't sell as well as people think (Most Mac users I know dont use their macs because of the OS but because a quite a few pieces of multimedia software simply runs better on a mac than a PC right now).

    2. People who want 'OSX on x86' don't really want the OS itself.
They want the GUI. I mean come on, put two plain monitors beside eachother and hide the machines themselves. Then take virtually anyone and ask them which one simply looks cooler. I'd say OSX will be their choice almost every time. OSX is based more on image than anything else. Watch some of Steve Jobs presentations of OSX. For a few brief moments he will mention 'Oh yeah, OSXs' core is based on BSD' and then he spends HOURS on how cool the dock/wharf/whatever is and how nifty the buttons are. Face it, OSX sells to a lot of people because of how it looks more than anything else and fortunately, this is easy to duplicate. Software such as what Stardock is releasing can enable Windows to emulate the OSX look. And thanks to a plethora of windowmanagers on linux its even easier to duplicate the OSX look on a cheap linux box. Take away the OSX GUI and then have a 'OSXonIntel' advocate tell you why they would want it on their machine.

Who has ethernet at home? A LOT of people. I for one not only have my house completely wired for ethernet (a jack in each room) but I just finished installing 100mbit ethernet in TWO houses. One was new, the other was remodelled. There IS a need to have these devices run on ethernet. Broadband in the home is becoming more prominent as telcos and cable companies force it into peoples homes. I say give every device an ethernet port and make the modem optional, not vice versa.

  8. FireWire and USB are not one in the same. on Is firewire dying? · · Score: 4

No-one at all can say which is dead, and which is not. Just as many posters before me have noted. Look at AMD and Intel. Everyone said Intel ruled the market and AMD would crumble at their feet. Yet AMD has just released a processor that blows the _current_ Pentium III's out of the water. This kind of thing happens so many times. Unless your the proud owner of a time machine, you and no-one else knows whats dead, till its dead.

You must also remember that USB and FireWire while being similar, are not one in the same. FireWire components can exist WITHOUT a computer. So you can (conceptually) go out and have a Sony HandiCam with firewire, plug it into a VCR with FireWire and transfer all your video, at very high speed to the VCR, or vice versa. Or any other number of components you have can talk to eachother with FireWire without the need to have a computer. And since PC's can support FireWire, you can also plug that same cable into your computer and do all the same there.

With USB (currently) you are usually always plugging the USB component into the computer. Not hooking one component to the other. This means, that if you go out and buy a product with USB on it, your ONLY use for it is with your computer. Now, I understand that many, many people have computers these days, but there are still many that dont have a computer at all. With USB components you have just lost this entire segment of the market. FireWire currently has its obvious andvatagaes, and like it or not, DOES have some large backers such as Apple, Microsoft, Sony and Compaq to name a few. These companies as Im sure you will agree are NOT small time. Yes they have all seen their fair share of their products that don't succeed. But FireWire is certainly far from dead.

Regardless of both these things, I would like to see some kind of standard come into place. I own both USB products and FireWire products and would like to see one single standard, or a possible interopability. But until then, or until one is entirely phased out, no-one can say who is 'king'.

  9. Are these really THAT far fetched? on K7 vs. Pentium III benchmarks · · Score: 1

Though I highly doubt the credibility of these benchmarks, I wouldn't find them that far fetched either. Taking the naive attitude that AMD will build a supercomputer processor for cheaper than a Celeron is insane.

If you take a look at chip pricing today. You will see that the AMD K6-III is currently more expensive than the PentiumII-450 (by about $39) and even the PentiumIII-450 (by about $25). What makes anyone think that when the K7 comes out it will be so much cheaper than Intel offerings. Companies are in business to make a profit. AMD is a company. Therefore, and this goes especially for AMD, getting profit it the bottom line. AMD has been losing money because of trying to sell their processors to cheap. A company can only do this for so long. When the Premium K7 comes out its also going to come out with a Premium price tag. Just like the Intel chips. So please, don't continue to think that the K7 will be a cheap chip. Performance has its price.

Taking the also very naive idea that Intel cant build a better chip than AMD is also idiotic. While in my eyes the K7 currently appears to be a better processor than the CURRENT PentiumIIIs. What makes anyone think that Intel cant do better than them? When prototype samples of the K7 are out, who do you think some of the first people to have their hands on the specimens are? I guarantee you Intel techs are some of those people. Intel knows what AMD is up to long before you and I do. And is it really that far fetched that there could be a pro-Intel guy working for AMD? Or vice-versa? Welcome to corporate America where _Everyone_ has their price (Except Linus Torvalds apparently. :)

We can crown a processor as king these days, but not for very long. And in all actuality its impossible to say who makes a better chip. AMD may bring out its K7, but in the fairly long time they have been designing this chip, who knows what Intel, Motorola, IBM and even 'lil Cyrix have come up with. One company may squeeze ahead for a while, but another one may squeeze by and take the lead from them. It will be interesting to see as the months (and years) go by who will come out on top. Who knows, maybe a few years from now we will all be running Linux on Cyrix chips. Hey, It could happen to Cyrix, did YOU think 3 years ago that AMD would pose such a threat to Intel's happy little camp?
