  1. Greed. on Record Labels Push for iTunes Price Hike · · Score: 5, Interesting

It's all about greed. How is it that RIAA wants $1.25 a compressed DRM song in the US but you can legally download an uncompressed no-DRM song from Russian for just $0.01 per MB?!? That means ~$0.35 per song. And if you decide to go for the compressed equivalent of what you find on the iTMS, you're talking about $0.04!! The same thing happens with the movie industry and DVD region codes. A legally purchased DVD that costs $20 in the US typically costs $2 elsewhere.

If markets are going to normalize across borders in this new globalized "Internet age" where big businesses send our jobs overseas, they better accept that we are also going to send our dollars overseas too. That's if their lucky. I'm willing to bet that a lot of people are going to feel cheated by this new development and are going to go right back to the P2Ps that RIAA has worked so hard to get us to stop using.

  2. Re:This is annoying. on iTunes 4.5 Authentication Cracked · · Score: 4, Insightful

Last I checked, you can just buy the CD at the store that contains no DRM at all.

The problem is that you never know what you are going to get when you buy a CD. Many CDs these days come with DRM that stops you from playing the songs on computers and even some stereos. And you don't know until you try it at which point the stores won't let you return it because it was opened. So given the choice between a useless, ~$15, round, shiny piece of sh... err... plastic or a ~$10 downloaded album that I can burn to a CD, copy to my iPod, or play on 5 different computers, I think the choice is obvious. The phrase "lesser of two evils" comes to mind.

  3. Read the Press Release! on Mac OS X Trojan Horse Infects MP3s · · Score: 3, Informative

The linked article (and most coverage of this trojan) is very misleading. This trojan does not delete files, propagate itself, or infect other files. The press release from Intego just says that a trojan like this could do those things. Read the press release for yourself.

The important thing to realize here is that Mac OS X, while very secure, is not perfect. And no matter what OS you are using, you should be very careful what you double click! Let's hope Apple nails this quickly!

  4. Re:ok... on The Nation of Macintosh? · · Score: 1
    Macs are more expensive.

More expensive than what? When people compare prices it would help if they compare apples to... err... um... other PPC based Unix workstations.

    Apple's PowerMac (dual 867 MHz G4, 256 MB, 60 GB) goes for about US$1700.

    IBM's low-end AIX workstation, RS/6000 43P model 150 (single 375 MHz 604e, 128MB, 9.1 GB) goes for about US$8800. The 604e is 2 generations older than the G4. Apple hasn't made a Mac with a 604e since 1997.

Oh, and a task manager in iCal would be extremely useful.

You mean like the one that appears when you click on the thumbtack button in the bottom right corner of iCal? Yeah, that would be nice.
