I don't know if its the same story your refering to, but...
A few years ago this software was used to track down a serial rapist here in Lafayette, Louisiana. Turns out the guy was a local cop (Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Officer, I think).
He was really successful at avoiding capture for a long time (read years) because he gave the detectives on the case "leads" from "confidetial informants" that of course wouldn't lead to him.
That's either really smart on his part or, really stupid on the part of the local P.D. I'm still not sure which.
Los alamos is run by the gub'ment and they dodn't have to abide by patents or copyrights. The millitary, for example, reverse engineers software all the time to make it more secure.
