  1. Re:Price on New Flat Screens From Apple · · Score: 1

    As for:
8.6 snappy? Perhaps, but it still won't take advantage of most of what the G4 has to offer.

I have it on good authority (inside Apple) that AltiVec QuickDraw is all ready, and should be included in MacOS 9 or released shortly thereafter, although strangely no mention of this was made at Seybold.

Yeah, I'm a Mac programmer. You got a problem with that?

32 128 bit registers running in parallel. Imagine how they can be used to pipeline operations that would otherwise require a bunch of instruction cycles... The possibilities are staggering. Want to optimize an app for G4 - Just recompile it for Altivec.

Let's not forget who uses the Mac-only app Mathematica - the gods of our industry, that's who!

I think you may be misunderstanding them, coming from your youthful point-of-view. Perhaps those who do what is required of them, and are not interested in the "exciting new" technologies, have learned that there is truly nothing new under the sun, and are content with their roles. And maybe they are more interested in their real lives than in the esoteric subjects which fascinate the idealistic young and inexperienced. Who knows what truly goes on in the heart and mind of the humble meditator?

Don't sweat too much over the code, if you can help it. It's going to be exactly like that for a long time to come. I have never done a "fresh" programming job without having a pile of language references in my lap, and I am becoming used to the fact that I probably never will.

Every new job has its challenges. If you welcome these, and remain open to them, then you can never be daunted or go out of style.

  8. What about IFF? on Feature:Alternative View of Microsoft Monopoly · · Score: 2

I remember the first time I came across IFF on the old Amiga I had a sudden epiphany. What a farking great idea! Although that format thrived on the Amiga it never really went anywhere else, which is sad.

It seems to me that a revival of this excellent format is in order. It would make it possible for any program to read any document of any type, simply by only pulling out the "chunks" it wanted and ignoring the rest.

Also IFF was defined to always be an open format. Any new "chunk" type had to be documented and registered, and then placed in the public domain to be viewed by anyone who wanted. In the days before WWW this was a lot more difficult, because you'd have to order a new "Inside Amiga" book to get the latest chunk information.

I would suggest to those in the Linux community who have not as-yet started making Open Document Format Standards a priority that the time is precisely NOW! to do it, and I can't imagine a better wrapper than IFF.

Let this stand as the seed of a manifesto.

I first learned to program largely on the original Apple II (through SoftSide Magazine!) and I caught the Apple bug. Some 20 years later I finally got a Mac and returned to my roots.

I wrote a shareware program for the Mac (I won't plug it here, I promise!) and I was particularly inspired by Woz as I wrote it. His engineering skill, his devotion to educating children, and his fondness for his guitars (visible on certain days on the WozCam) motivated me to do a good elegant job.

My program has turned out good, but since it serves a niche market it hasn't received many registrations. But imagine my absolute glee when The Woz himself coughed up the $15 and became one of the precious few who registered!

Hey, the man pays his shareware fees! That's enough for me.
