I really don't understand what you are talking about. I just added a usb Laserjet 1300 at my small network at work and a ethernet laserjet 5m to my small network at home. I knew ESRs article and expected the worst.

The usb laserjet: During server installation suse/yast2 found the printer and just asked me if i want to have it configured. I said "yes" and it worked. On the client boxes i have been asked if i want to install a local printer manually or use a networked printer. I said networked and that was it. Cups found the networked printer on the server. Needless to say that i did not have to tell samba about the printer. The windows boxes in the network could just use it out of the box (browse the net, click on servers name, click on printer, tell windows it's a laserjet 1300, use it).

At home it was basically the same with the minor exception that i had to tell the server that it was a laserjet 5m i wanted it to use.

I repeat: I didn't have to tell the clients anything about the printer. I basically said "there is one on the network, use it!" and that was it ... it was easier than under windows ...

The article states "and your message gets sent to some spare bits on the memory." This sounds like complete nonsense to me.

IMHO they connect the display to the i2c interface present on all modern rams. This is usually being used to read the ram modules configuration eeprom, but people have already attached other things to this port via a simm shaped interface board.

I wonder if this could interfere with other on board hardware connected to the systems i2c bus.

  4. GPL version on IBM Moves To Enforce GPL By Summary Judgement · · Score: 3, Interesting
Here's one question i always wanted to ask RMS: Why does the GPL aks the authors to allow their software to be distributed under later versions of the GPL? I am talking about this:

This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.

Now the question: Who decides what a later version of the GPL is? And what if RMS writes a version 12 saying that "all this code belongs to RMS"?

RMS can then take any GPL'd software including the statement above and put it under his new version 12 license.

Atari had the ROM sockets in some of the 1040ST models reveresed, so i frequently put the chips in the wrong way. Once day the were even smoking. I was sure, these chips were dead, but i corrected their seating, switched the atari on and ... viola ... the roms still worked and i used them for several years on.

The second thing were reversed eproms in on of my other atari related projects. Powering the system on made the golden wires used to connect the die to the eprom package to glow. Both eproms worked like a light bulb. Correcting the searting made the system work as well.

  12. That's a good question on Will Classic Games Disappear Forever? · · Score: 2, Interesting
I have been trying to keep the elite 3d space trading game alive on the palm (either as freeware, shareware or commercial ware, i'd really agree on everything). Unless stated on the web site (yes, i should update it), David Braben has started to discuss the issue in the meantime.

So now i have been dicussing the release of this remake for more than a year with both original copyright holders (ian bell and david braben). In fear of not getting the maximum output from this, they both have expressed their demands on how they want the release to be done. Unfortunately, their different demands just cannot be fullfilled at the same time. The result: They can't agree on a licence and there probably won't be a legal elite remake.

What i've learned from this: Some classic games may be lost forever and a living fan base isn't everthing that's needed to keep a game alive. Emulation can't prevent the number of legal copies of a game to decrease and some of the games may in fact just disappear.
