  1. Re:Panther is SLOW on Nonexistent Windows OS Superior to Panther · · Score: 1

Thanks for your comments. Let me deal with Points b) (mail/address) and d) (itunes). mail.app looks to "add contact to address book" every time you send an email. Even if the address has been used 100 times. Under Jaguar this took a Very long time. In my case more than 20 seconds for each email. There is a lot discussed about this in the forums (not just by us trolls) and a program has even been posted to patch it up (it is called Mailtuner). Under Panther it is much better, but my system after only 2 weeks starts slowing down again. I never had such wait times using Outlook. Regarding iTunes, I had to move to an external drive several songs in order to save space on my laptop and very simply iTunes lost track of them after I moved them. If I ask to "consolidate" the Library, they get copied back to my laptop. There is no way to move them from inside iTunes as you know. Perhaps there is a better way to do this and I am grateful in advance for any suggestion. thanks GS

  2. Panther is SLOW on Nonexistent Windows OS Superior to Panther · · Score: 1

I have switched fromm PC to MAC 2 years ago and I agree with the criticisms. OS X is terribly slow on a G3 machine with 680 MB of RAm. The Mail application looking for addresses 20 seconds per message was a joke. Now Panther has improved things a bit, but basically Apple has lost the software was when they admitted that Mac OS was obsolete and moved back to Unix. The OS X user interface has been made up from scratch, with some innivations but without the benefit of the long experience in dealing with directories that Windows has. For instance the iTunes "library" is associated in a totally arcane way to where the music files are located. Try to copy or move your Mp3's around outside of iTunes and the whole things gets lost. However you cannot MOVE your files (for instance from a hard disk to another) from within iTunes. You can only change your itunes directory, but there is no option to move all or some of your files there. I do agree that there is too much waporware at Apple.

How do I get into senior management? It is a good question. Forget the stuff about intestinal fortitude or being assertive ar all the psycho-babble. I would start at a small company and as mentioned by other commentators take the risk of specializing (doing something well). Get a good financial training (like CFA Level I, which is betteer than an MBA and you can do it while working). Take care!

Buzzwords are different from tech-jargon and acronyms. The last are just shorthand. Buzzwords and consultant speak instead are brainwashing techniques, reinforced by the psychological dogmas which are fostered on us by the "leadership" and management communications lobby. It is good to make fun of them!

I am not a programmer, but like many users, have a homeoffice network which mixes pcs and macs. Printing from macs to non pcl network printers is still a pain (Dave is not up to it). Should we expect rendez vous / apache to bridge this cumbersome canyon? Thanks

    Very informative!

As you seem to be well versed in this, is there a way to "see" from my iBook running Jaguar a Linksys printserver which is connected to my windows MSHOME network.

The printserver can be seen from the Win machines but not from the mac.

It only has the NETBEUI protocol.

  7. That is the question on Is Mac OS X Slow? · · Score: 1

Given the complexity of real life applications, the real question is indeed identifying the bottlenecks which slow down the user.

Indeed it is not some obscure kernel question but improving the overall user experienced speed.

    Two things i noticed:

    1) home networks setups can be horribly under optimized. People use mixed networks with Win and OSX machines and Apple network utility is not at all user friendly. OSX does not have NEtbeui and misses many protocols. If a user does not know how to trun it off, it is still burdening the network with Appletalk, which is a useless dynosaur.

    2) OSX still cannot print across a Win network on NON POSCRIPT printers. Even with Dave. Now most home users have cheap inkjet printers which sometimes do not even have USB ports. Yes if you are a geek you can install Superprint etc. But who has the time?

    3) generally, OSX loads applications much slower than Win XP. There is some latency in the system.

My suggestion would be to include in the OSX a really smart bot which monitors resource bottlenecks and identifies when the system is stuck waiting for something to happen which may be instead "cutoff".

    Dear Art:
Your answer was very clear. Also a previous answer pointed to Gnu. Let me play back what I understand.
    1) OS X is not open source
    2) GNU step can be used to run OS X applications on other UNIX platforms, but not Windows yet.

The graphical stuff in OS X is proprietary to Apple.

I just do not understand what exactly is GNU step. Is it a language, a complier, an operating system, an emulator? Excuse my old fashioned language, but I am not an IT person!
    Thanks

  10. is OS X open source? on Which Coding Framework for Mac OS X ? · · Score: 1

I am a nontechnical businessman and I have a question about OS X. YOu seem to be knowleadgeable about this matter. so perhaps you can help me clarify one question. Is the source code for OS X available for licensing? Is it open source? is it published? I ask this because OS X derives from Unix and Next and must be related to Linux. I think it has a beautiful GUI and network capabilities and it would be fun (and profitable) to port OS X to other microprocessors, outside of the APPLE/Power PC niche. Apple will never do it themselves. Thanks in advance
