  1. A Theory on SCO Now Willfully Violating the GPL · · Score: 1

I think SCO is trying to keep this in the media as long as they can, and I actually think they're working on Microsofts behalf. I would guess that Longhorn will be released in the beginning of the Trial, when SCO has had it's 2-3 years in the media once in a while with their FUD about Linux. So they will FUD linux as much as they can while trying to make their system as good as linux or better, while the case goes to Trial Windows Marketers are going to blow their Longhorn and promote Windows as never before. --- In a world without fences, who needs Gates!

I had a 30 minute chat yesterday, both users behind broadband connections. The sound quality was excellent and both me and the other party asked a few more of our friends to install it, and most of them did...

  3. They found the money on New VOIP App. Profiled · · Score: 5, Insightful

According to their FAQ there is no spyware. However it suggests that there is an Skype to fixed landline phone / mobile phone feature on the horizon. So they're marketing plan is probably, create a viral product, get everyone to use it, add a valuable service ( make a cheap call to your friends mobile on the other side of the globe ). So I don't think they need the spyware this time, and the apps quality is quite good also, although I would like to see conference calls implemented. Just hope we'll get a linux client soon.

  4. Re:"Can't be bothered..." on Restrictive Sales Practices on the Web? · · Score: 1

Hmm. Well yes I've considered all those things (Same rules applies to all EU countries, while Iceland is not part of the EU the same rules apply here (amazon.co.uk only ships to UK and Ireland)). However I can order electronics from much smaller sellers than amazon. Of course nobody want's them to 'pick the device up' if it's faulty. So when using smaller resellers I am responsible for shipping the device back if it's faulty, this takes time and some handwriting in the customs. Have you seen the price on electronics in Iceland recently.

I can't see why there is a reason to recreate what's already there. I live in Iceland and if I order a book from amazon.co.uk (no I can't order electronics), they send it via Air Mail and the Icelandic post office takes the package to my door and charges me for customs. This takes about 2-5 days, brought to my door. I buy 10-15 books per year, mostly quite expensive computer related books, the last 3 years I've bought every single one of them from amazon. But why can't they ship electronics ?

  6. Mozilla, IMAP SMTP on Which Organizations Have Standardized on Mozilla? · · Score: 1

I have a setup at a small business which is divided into 3 locations where we have 15 computers all using Mozilla (2 hotels and one office). Each hotel has its own mailbox on the server and they are viewable from both places. This setup has worked extremely well with novice users and we've had very few problems.

  7. This is good and the support is excellent on Crossover Office 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

I am the first one to run Linux as a workstation in the company I work for. It has over 200 employees and a fairly good infrastructure where MS Office pays quite a large part (I needed Outlook, Word and Excel).

First of all, this is a very important issue if your moving over to Linux. Where I work we're using shared excel workbooks that break up if I open them in OO, there are still a few Word documents I can't read in OO and I'd rather start word than rebooting. If you can use OO only, excellent, but a reboot into Windows would be what my boss would call an unacceptable delay.

Then unfortunately I had big problems with Ximians Exchange Connector and Evolution. Sincerely I haven't gotten it to work yet without crashing when I try to view my Calendar or Tasks. I bought this product to test it since I had problems with changing the domain on MS Outlook under Crossover. However after one e-mail to their support they hacked the Windows control panel applet for Mail settings to work under Crossover Wine, and voila I could change my Exchange settings.

One thing however that I would like to point out. None of the features that break OO compatibility are critical to my company, so it would be possibly to move to OO, but it would probably take some work and probably some pressure against the more Microsoft focused persons in the company.

This made me think that they probably know a lot more than many developers at MS about MS Office and how its related to Windows.

P.S. I also bought Win4Lin but haven't run that since I bought Crossover.
