  1. Could it be...? on Arch In Depth · · Score: -1, Offtopic

That it will be Microsoft's Archilees heel?

  2. The new 'underbelly' of IT.... on phpBB Forum Down After Defacement · · Score: 1
and open source in particular will be keeping up with all of the known holes and their fixes. I subscribe to three different security announcement listserves, and I still didn't hear about a patch for Mambo OS until I went to the forums looking for an answer on a stupid question. If I hadn't gone to the forums (I don't too often) I'd still be unpatched.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but with the diversity in my network I could spend a whole day each week looking for issues on the services I run...

  3. As an IT Director in education on The Sub-$100 Laptop? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I have to admit that I currently hate laptops. Part of it is that they are expensive and fragile, but mainly because when someone can carry a computer about with them, it becomes "MINE" - they assume they can do whatever they want with it. I could envision using these as a mobile lab or textbook running off of a LTSP type host, but otherwise I'd be afraid at the upkeep time needed for them - even running Linux!

  4. Guitar/music repair shop on What Can Be Done with a Tube Collection? · · Score: 1

Find a guitar shop that specializes in vintage equipment. Those old tube amps are highly prized by musicians, and the shop I ran used to make a killing on the tubes and the repairs. They'd have the demand for the tubes and the equipment. We used to buy replacement tubes from some Russian company who was still cranking them out, but when we could get our hands on originals they were worth 2-4X as much.

  5. quicker to roll your own vs. pre-made on Build a Database Driven Site -- Quick · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm always amazed when books claim 'quick' web development with MySQL and PHP. I think the planning of data structures alone makes this a not quick process. With like a gazillion pre-made CMS's available for demo at OpenSourceCMS (http://www.opensourcecms.com/) wouldn't that be the 'quick' way to go?

  6. It shouldn't be a suprise. on Defeating XP SP2 Heap Protection · · Score: 4, Interesting
that it's easier to bypass a patch over a hole, than get through a barrier that was built solidly from the beginning. I have a mental image of a steel door with a big piece of cardboard taped to it....

  7. Blender + Python = Games on Crash Course in Game Programming? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think Blender is an excellent choice here. It's free, cross platform and very easy to get started in. Combinde with Pythin and the info available at GameBlender.org it should be very easy to get a awesome project out quickly. My 11 year old daugher got going with the 3D modeling in an afternoon after watching the online video tutorials.

  8. Voice Recognition on Cutting Edge Computer Interfaces? · · Score: 1
I've been doing a lot of research on voice recognition software lately, as the school I work at has a student with MS we'd like to help be a litle more independent in his computer work. I've been playing with it since Apple first bundled it with OS 7, and it seems like it's just on the cusp of actually being usable - even on a handheld.

I'd say whoever puts some research into how to write the UI for voice input and does it right will be well ahed of the game in a few years.

  9. Digital V6 Kaveman - KVM over IP on It's 2004: What Are The Best Remote KVM Options? · · Score: 1

I've had great luck with an 8 port KVM over IP switch bu Digital V6 (http://digitalv6.com/)

Reasonable cost - works with VNC, or a java applet.

I also bought the integrated power control - I can now cobtrol the mouse/keyboard as well as cycle power from just about any web browser.
