You only get spam these days because you want spam or are too dumb to do anything about it...
I think its kinda sad that attitudes like this are so prevalent on slashdot.
Just because someone doesn't know how to install a spam filter on their own, that doesn't make them dumb. It may seem simple to you, but bear in mind there are people out there who used computers solely for writing emails and word documents and the like. Configuration options confuse them. That doesn't mean they're dumb (well, not all of them anyways). It just means they've chosen to spend their time unrelated to computers, and they haven't gained the knowledge and experience that you have. It doesn't mean they deserve to get their inbox crammed with spam everyday.
How would you feel if you got mugged and the police told you "well, if you're not strong enough to defend yourself, its your own damn fault. Maybe you should take up martial arts or something.
They distract people from things they should be paying attention to.
Last year, we had a girl here who walked in front of a train while talking on her cell phone. Apparently, the she didn't notice the giant white train barrelling down on her, nor did she notice the ringing bells, flashing lights or the fact that everyone she was walking with had stopped walking to let the train pass.
I've always wondered what she was talking about that was SO important. Also, I want to know what the person on the other end of the line heard....
Yes, but thats Singapore Air. I flew on them a fair bit this past summer, and without a doubt they are the best airline I have ever flown on. Staff was friendly, and the inflight entertainment, even in economy class, was far superior to any other airline I've ever flown on (and I've flown on ALOT). I'm not sure about their shorter flights, but for long flights each seat already has its own private screen to watch movies, tv shows and play video games on. Its probably not too much of a hassle for them add email capabilities.
This is the sort of thing I'm studying at school (not this EXACT problem, but high-level math.)
Not to say that I understand this problem or its solution, but I have professors who probably would. And holy crap, the things you hear the guys who do this sort of stuff discussing on their coffee breaks....
I agree entirely. However, in this case it seems like since SearchKing was deliberately manipulating their previous algorithm to obtain higher PageRank for web sites, that Google was obligated to change their algorithm.
Changing the algorithm was the only way they could continue to offer unbiased and useful search results, which is what they advertise.
This whole suit is just another example of one of the latest trends: treating the Internet as nothing more than a giant marketplace for companies to get rich off.
Business's such as SearchKing.com (and other similar sites, including others who have also sued Google) seem to believe that it is their right to make money off the Internet. When they talk about how Google's PageRank system affects the ability of people to search the web and link to who they want to link to, what they really mean is that it affects their ability to make money off of people searching the web.
The Internet was never intended to be simply a giant online marketplace, where information and products can be bought and sold. So if other people can provide a better service than you, that produces better results and more accurate information, and that affects your ability to make money...well, tough luck.
I agree, the social experience is my favorite part of going out to the movies.
Thats why I'm happy about the current theatre situation here (Calgary). Sure, there's lots of big, expensive $13-a-ticket theatres with stadium seating and built-in Taco Bells. But a major chain (Cineplex Odeon) ran into some financial difficulty, and shut down a few theatres near my house. An independent businessman bought one, and turned it into a second-run theatre (so after the movie gets out of the big theatres, but before it hits video). $4 Canadian a ticket! $2 for a matinee or a Tuesday night! Plus, they tuned down the price of popcorn and soda.
Sure, the sound and screen aren't as good as the big theatres, but for a lot of movies (especially comedies, and things that dont' feature a lot of special effects) thats not really a big deal. And I still get the social experience of being out with friends (just getting out the house is worth the $4 to me).
Bless you independent second-run theatres. Bless you.

before I believe it. Even then, how can I be sure.
Sounds like you may have taken a few too many philosophy courses....
All jokes, all jokes...
