Sorry, your slashdot post writing has just been outsourced. Thanks for all your posts over the years. You might find some work over at kuro5hin. :)

I was amazed by the support on my ThinkPad. Originally sold in Italy, bought as a second-hand refurb by me in the UK a year later. I then move to Australia and another year after that the hard drive breaks down. Called IBM support in Australia with the serial number - no worries sir, it's under warranty - new HD shipped out the next working day. For free.

I'm sticking with IBM from now on :) And no, I don't work for them...

If any country can claim to set the grammatical standard for English, it would be the UK
    Possibly not, it would seem.

    From this site:

"In fact, there is a great body of historical evidence that American English is much closer to historical English in England, than the version that is spoken today in modern day Britain. It may come as a surprise to the sneerers to learn that words such as fall, for autumn, mad for angry, trash for rubbish and scores of other Amercanisms all come from Elizabethan England. Many linguists believe that the accent Shakespeare's plays would have been performed in would have sounded nothing like the classic renditions we've heard by Gielgud or Olivier. These linguists believe that the accent typically heard in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, would had a distinct twang that we would associate today with the west country. A little bit more like, shock of shocks, the American accent."

It uses H323 so it's compatible with a lot of stuff. I use GnomeMeeting to chat to Windows users and OS X users. OpenPhone and NetMeeting for Windows, OhPhoneX for OS X.

Also I believe GnomeMeeting is now (just about) usable on OS X with Fink.

That's a good plan. A variant that I often find useful is to use virtual desktops to divide distracting stuff (email, slashdot, etc) from work stuff. So virtual desktop 1 contains evolution, galeon pointed at slashdot etc, and desktop 2 contains vi editing my code, galeon pointed at my dev site, etc.

It does of course require a certain level of discipline to not switch back to the distracting desktop all the time ;)

Just closing evolution and only opening it once an hour when I want to check my mail also helps me to get on with the job.
