  1. N'Sync killed the ISS... on NASA Considers Abandoning ISS · · Score: 1

"One contributing factor to the budget crisis was the failure in recent months of commercial flights aboard Soyuz vehicles. Although some seats have been sold to European astronauts, the financial collapse of the project to fly pop singer Lance Bass, and the apparent inability of the Russians to find a paying customer for the third seat on the Soyuz that is set to launch next April, have resulted in losses of between $20 million and $30 million. Each Soyuz spacecraft costs $10 million, with additional costs to launch and operate."

Damn... I knew there was some sort of hidden agenda with this whole Lance Bass in Space idea... I thought it was just a PR stunt! But a secret plan to force NASA et al. to mothball the ISS? I'm stunned.

  2. Let's bill them... on Danish Anti-Piracy Organization Bills P2P Users · · Score: 1

We should have those p2p users bill the Antipiratgruppen for loss of fair use. Instead of doing calculations, you could just bill them what they billed you and ask them to call it even.

  3. Libraries in the past... libraries in the future.. on Library Censorware Blocks Own Site · · Score: 2, Funny

The UCLA main research library used to be officially named the "Hugh G. Dick" library -- everyone called it the university library. If the CIPA case gets reversed by the Supreme Court, all libraries will have to think hard about their names (and anyone else who wants to be found by people in libraries).

  4. M.A.P. on Edgar Allan Poe, Cosmologist · · Score: 1

How many morbid, alcoholic poets do we have reading these threads, anyway? I'd wager more than a few...

  5. legislation exists to subvert this... on EU Anti-Hate Laws On The Web · · Score: 5, Informative

With the newly proposed Office of Global Internet Freedom, we may actually end up spending taxpayer dollars to subvert any kind of filtering that the EU enacts on US hate sites (which are roughly 63% of all hate sites on the Internet according to the EU).

  6. Re:What a shame... on NASA Cancels Moon Hoax Book · · Score: 2, Interesting

I heard this from an aquaintance in London... he said in an email, "One of my niece's friends was told by her teacher in the classroom that the moon landings never happened, and that man never went to the moon. This little girl asked my sister to ask me (the closest thing they have to a 'space expert') to help her prove that her teacher is lying." If you would like to get in touch with this person... post an email address. Joebeone

  7. What a shame... on NASA Cancels Moon Hoax Book · · Score: 2, Interesting

There are teachers teaching their 3rd-grade students that the moon landing never happened... It appears they shall continue. (although I suppose they wouldn't have given much credence to the NASA publication anyway)

  8. Not so fast robot... on EMI Customer Relations Tells It Like It Is · · Score: 3, Informative

I wouldn't hesitate to say that this punk (the customer service rep.) doesn't know what he's talking about... check out this article from New Scientist where John Halderman, a computer scientist from Princeton University, argues that any type of audio-CD copy-protection is futile with the advent of upgradable firmare in CD players. As long as we can reverse-engineer their copy-protection, we can play our CDs in our computers.

  9. evidence of moon landing... on NASA Wasting Time and Money on Moon Landing Doubters · · Score: 2, Interesting

Look people... there is a parabolic mirror array that observatories use to measure the distance between the Earth and the Moon... if this isn't proof that we went to the moon, I don't know what is (and yes it would be beyond the capabilites of current technology to deliver such a mirror to the surface of the moon with robotics).
