  1. Scares the hell out of me! on The Genome Project and the Dark Side · · Score: 1

I don't know about you guys but this whole genome project scares me to death. Someone, somewhere will use this information to create weapon that is a strain of something that affects every human being and we will not be able to stop its effects. Like Ian said in Jurassic Park "No one ever stopped to ask 'should we do it' instead of 'can we do it'".

I eat sleep and breath technology, but there are just somethings I have to leave up to the almighty.

You need to have a penguin sitting at a computer desk in the workplace. This penguin needs to have on headphones with music blaring and tennis shoes that are not tied. Behind the desk, on the wall, is a dart board with Bill Gates at the primary target and the flights on three arrows are the logos for RedHat, Caldera, and Suse. Also on the wall is a frame with needlepoint in it that says "Gnome sweet Gnome".

On the desk there needs to be a large coffee cup with "Open Source Rules!" on it that is sitting right next to a Dreamcast game machine. Oh, and don't forget to put Slashdot's home page on the computer monitor.

Just a few things I brainstormed about (way too much coffee today).

Well now we know it! And what an unbelievably brilliant idea that will make them the next Intel. For the lay persons, what they are making is the combination of a new microprocessor and BIOS that interprets X86 commands and runs them on a RISC processor. This combination works as a hardware excellerated DOS/Windows emulator. Their claim that it runs faster than Intel's systems makes sense. It's like having two processors that are cheaper than the Pentium that run faster than the Pentium. I have two questions: When is the IPO and when do I get my hands on one of these. I imagine that the error handling will do what Microsoft and Intel have never accomplished...revert back to "last good state" when an error is generated. Oh my!!!!!!

I've been an avide /. visitor for over a year and I've never felt like posting. But your gripe changes it. Since you haven't noticed it, the cute slogan for the site is "News for Nerd. Stuff that matters", not just "News for nerds.". This site was created by Rob and his (along with his friends) personalities are all over it. They intentionally let "comedy" crawl all over the site. I have a feeling that this is to lighten up the world a bit...we all know that most news sucks (how many shootings do we have to see in detail to know there are a lot of crazies out there). The wonderful part of this site is that your comments get posted too. I've spent 15 years working in the media and most orgs never post negative comments about themselves. I ask you to understand that this site is about life. Loosen up a little and enjoy the site. If you want only to learn, go buy an O'Reilly book (oops, they have humor too). Just know that the /. guys like to have fun and this site has never been advertised as "news only". They are doing their best. If you don't like it, create your own site and see how hard it is to always be fair. As a last thought, please don't . That accomplishes nothing in life. Do something constructive with that energy like write a USB driver for Linux.
