It depends on who you talk to. As usual, some (mind you, this is just some) of the fans have their own conspiracy theories.
One is that MGM caved into MS so he's back. Or, that MS caved into MGM, which makes no sense either. It all boils down to money and ratings. SciFi attained good ratings with season six, but their highest ratings to date for the entire network (according to their own press release) came from repeats of season one.
Now, some ship (Jack/Sam) fans are all upset because they think Daniel coming back will come in between Jack and Sam, although where, who knows, as I didn't see much if any ship in season six. And then there are some Jonas fans who are all in a state because they think Jonas will get the heave-ho or get relegated to a position where all he does is stand around and smile.;)
There there are some fans who think that the Daniel fans will sway the producers to make it the Daniel Jackson hour, which contradicts their other view that the Daniel fans had nothing to do with bringing MS back to the show.
And there are the fans who say that only the true l/ loyal / real [please select one] fans are the ones responsible for the show coming back.
Some fans are calling for reconciliation of the fandom, but as long as you've got fans who say 'oh yes, it's a good idea, now we can get past all the death threats and hate mail and i hope those people apologize' crud, it will continue to be the little soap opera on the net;)
Unfortunately the show is never going to reach any kind of potential as they say season five is the last season, then change their mind and do a season 6, which should have been the end, now t hey want to do a season 7. How can you write any coherent continuing plots if you never know when the show will end?
Oh wait, they just want to make Stargate another Star Trek franchise!
They'd be better off ditching SG1, doing the movie, or some other spinoff.
Apparently the producer who spoke at a recent UK convention spoke out of turn. No xmas bonus for him!:(

The drop in quality, at least for some of us, began in season 4, when characters such as Anise/Freya were introduced, Sam had a ratty hairdo, and Sam and Jack declared feelings for each other. It was also the season of death - they began bumping off recurring characers like Martouf (which made Sam available for Jack) and Rothman. Then, the show was going to conclude at the end of season five, but the fans rallied and asked for it back, but Michael Shanks decided not to re-up, and then we got stuck with Jonas, the character with, well, no character. Bugs Bunny has more personality and he's a cartoon! Plus season six began retreading plots from movies (such as "A beautiful mind" to name just one). It's become preditable, and at times, downright boring. When Jack is bored to tears, imagine how the audience feels? Unless they get new writers, season seven will be more of the same, and it will probably tank.
SciFi has yanked repeats of season six for the time being so fans will concentrate on the repeats of seasons 1-4 on Monday nights. It probably helps any new fans who will wonder why is Daniel in one episode,and Jonas in another.
Season five is running in syndication on Fox. Seasons 1-4 will syndicate on SciFi. I hate to say this but smart fans will buy seasons 1-2 on DVD because SciFi DOES edit the episodes. Shame.
