Premature Rumors about Stargate Season 7?
An anonymous reader writes "While some were excited about the news of Stargate's renewal, others remained cautiously skeptical. Those is who did might be interested in reading this story posted on Zap2it." I for one hope the show keeps going. With the loss of Farscape, SG1 is possibly the best straight up sci-fi on TV- and the last show on the SciFi channel I watch.
Was an excellent series until Daniele Jackson died, then it just went downhill. I wouldn't be suprised it it was continued, because of the trend that SciFi seems to be taking. But, if they do continue it, I will continue to watch it. KREE!
And why did you staple the trout to the RAM?
Are there any robots in Stargate? SciFi is only good when there's robots.
The last show I watched regularly on the SciFi channel was Mystery Science Theater 3000, which I can never find on anymore. By the way, what happened to anime week during the summer? Or saturday morning anime? My SciFi channel viewing has gone down a lot over the past few years and no SG1 (which I only watch every now and then) would shoot it down to zero.
Read their reaction though I think Wellstone wasn't pleased.
I feel that they should have honestly stopped after the making of the movie. Trying to milk the success of the movie with a sub-par space drama/action really hasn't been of too much artistic merit, in my opinion. The dialogue is weak and the plots are generically cheesy. I'm surprised it is still hanging on to this possible 7th season.
Don't consider this a flame... I'm definitely open to suggestions as to why this show is worth the time to watch...
My little sad piece of the internet: www.mtndewd
if SG1 got canned. I mean, with Roswell gone, it's almost the last refugre for non-trek Sci-fi.
120 character sigs suck. Make it 250.
I'd very much like to see another Stargate movie. While the TV-series was cool, it didn't have quite the impact of the precluding movie. We've had enough same-ol-same-ol trek movies, perhaps Stargate could throw a new spin into things (hopefully without making it just a long episode).
imo they should release the earlier seasons (DVD VHS etc.) first.
I agree with you that the movie was horrible but I would say that the show is much, much better than the movie ever was
What do you expect? I mean they showed Farscape to help keep up the numbers of its No 2 Show Lexx. It is mainly dispointing stuff that comes from Sci-Fi, endless reruns of crap with a decent movie thrown into the mix every once in a while.
Since the departure of James Spader, the show just hasn't been the same. And while the Egyptian motif is one of the most unique in sci-fi (especially amongst Sci-Fi channel programming), I think it might be time to put the show out to pasture along with Mystery Science Theater 3000 and hope for some new good original programming along the lines of Earth: The Final Conflict.

---- El diablo esta en mis pantalones! Mire, mire!
Apparently, it is in part due to Richard Dean Anderson... he is relocating to LA to be back with his family (a bit like Anthony Head (Giles in Buffy) returning to England for over a year. But he might rough it and do a hotel stint for the 7th season (if it does go ahead).
A great Stargate site to go to is Gateworld, not only for nes and tidbits, but is great for episode info... etc.
I sincerely hope that Stargate does get renewed for a seventh season, and that the possible post series feature film (that might deal with finishing off the Goa'uld) as well as Stargate: Atlantis, we are certainly getting a great amount of Science Fiction viewing.
The Enterprise production team seriously ought to look at Farscape and SG1, because they are way superior to what recycled crap they are coming out with... the only good new thing going for Trek is the soon to be released Nemesis.
Are you local? There's nothing for you here!
Not for the show's content itself, but so SciFi will lose such a large portion of their viewer base that they will realize (shortly before going under, should all go well) that canning good shows is not a good idea.
Without any new farscape episodes after the wrap up of this season, and if there were no more episodes of stargate sg1 after this series, would there really be anything worth watching anymore on scifi? (besides of course the good episodes of both when they are in reruns, but even that gets boring after repeated viewing)
Until it 'disappeared' ......
you could find on the web, the story of the finding of the 'real' stargate in egypt in the early 1900's....
Anyone have a link to this that still works ???
Yeah, the movie sucked... but the TV series is produced by different people, folks who know what they're doing and actually understand science and science fiction. Try it. You might want to stay far away from the new Saturday morning animated show called Stargate:Infinity, though. It shares some concepts with the movie and SG1, but it's a real dog.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence
They have had a few stories this season that have been a bit more fast and loose than the equivalents were on Showtime. Admittedly, the USAF has been working on alien tech for a while now, and they have been very good about making it obvious that while we can replicate and understand how to make some of the technology, once they moved over to the Scifi channel, tech starts popping out all the place. The fighter with the hyper drive, the warship (which cost a bit too little for it being made of such rare materials under such secrecy and with such one-off parts...and in a ridiculous shape for the task at hand too...sheesh), and so on.
Well, a good way of putting it is that there has been a lot of ideas thrown around without thought of what the consequences might be unlike before.
Don't get me wrong, it's still orders of magnitude better than Trek, but...the flavour change isn't quite as tasty as before. Think New Coke.
Do you know why the road less traveled by is littered with the bones of the unwary?
In the case of Earth 2, they just pre-empted too many shows due to football on Sunday nights and kept moving around the timeslot. I was an avid viewer and couldn't find the show half the time. No wonder the ratings weren't what they wanted. As far as SG-1 goes, I kept Showtime for two years just for that show... and dropped it as soon as it moved over to sci-fi.

I second that motion.
I'm a Vancouver person -- I find it odd that every single planet they visit happens to look just like Squamish, BC. :)
I just checked their web site. Looks like their only original series left will be Crossing Over. Sort of a misplaced show. High marks for fiction but no a zero for science.
They should change their name to the fi channel
The most powerful method of Pavlonian conditioning is to reward the stimulus sparodically. Just enough to establish there is a connection. Providing a reward with every stimulus isn't as effective for some reason. The sparodic rewards are why slot machines are so fun and addicting. Lots of crap, interspersed with rewards.
Which works out well in the television industry, since the filler they place in between rewards is inexpensive.
Yeah, and what's with that bald chick in the Star Trek movie? I mean, that ruined it for me.
I'm so glad I haven't wasted any of my time with the subsequent movies or series. I mean, if it's that bad on the first movie you shudder to think of how bad it must have been by, oh, the 4th or 5th year of the first spinoff series.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. -- H L Mencken
Lexx had it all. What more could a sci-fi nut want? Great tits, erotic undertones, a dead assasin and a live ship. Only thing it was missing was full frontal nudity.
Oh God, I hope I didn't miss the full frontal nudity.
Anyone know which episode it was in if I did miss it?
What mindless drones feel this should be included with Science Fiction? How about palm reading with Madame Zora and your daily horoscope by Hubert the One-eyed goat?
Between Hercules in Space and MacGyver through the portal. I'm kinda lost.
What ever happened to Space Above and Beyond?
In other news: Hollywood has perfected human cloning. Until this post I too thought they were the same person.
or perhaps the original poster was saying that the show hasn't been the same since it began... without James Spader.
It breaks my pluginses, my precious!
One of the cool things i noticed in the last ep is that they take relativity into account - the bounty hunter captain talking to his supplier mentioned that what was 3 weeks to them on the ship was 4 years to the folks back home.
What's this show Stargate?
Why haven't I heard of it?
Why is it in season 7?
Where am I?
so exactly why are you here?
I have never understood all this "nerd" bashing at a place that claims to be "news for nerds".
But I have never really been all that interested in any of the series on the SciFi channel. Especially since most seem to be spinoffs from movies which I usually didn't see either.
It doesn't matter to me if Stargate, MST3K, Farscape, The Invisible Man, Lexx, Earth Above and Beyond, Babylon 5, etc are ever shown in rerun, or new production. I would rather read a good scifi book than watch a scifi tv show. Especially since the acting in so many of them is dreadful, the 'aliens' are so obviously people with rubber face pieces, and the plots are both totally predictable and designed to be over in one hour (40 minutes without commercials).
Quite honestly, the only scifi shows I enjoyed were the original Star Trek reruns, Buck Rodgers, and BattleStar Galactica. And only Star Trek holds up in syndication. (Of course part of that might be that my brother and I had to stay up late to watch Star Trek as kids, so there was also the fact we were staying up late without mom and dad knowing.)
Oh, wait. Does Dark Angel count as scifi, since she was genetically designed? I enjoyed that show for the first season, since she was hot, but then the plot karma caught up to it.
Aw, sorry, I just couldn't resist it. Personally, I've not really watched it much recently (on plain UK tv that is), but I did like it (and the film of course) when I watched it in the past. Wonder which series it is they're showing over here, I expect we should get a fair few more before the end.
Be careful! New moon tonight.
Ok, the movie was pure camp, but it wasn't a terrible way to lounge away an afternoon munching popcorn. I'd never pay to see the current TV run cut-of-cloth as a movie. Yecch.
With the loss of Farscape, SG1 is possibly the best straight up sci-fi on TV- and the last show on the SciFi channel I watch.
Sounds like a real indictment of TV SciFi. Sorry, Taco, you were born way to late. Even the original Flash Gordon isn't this bad.
A feeling of having made the same mistake before: Deja Foobar
>Sorry, Taco, you were born way to late.
Speaking of that, when will they play "The Prisoner" again? I caught it once or twice in a trailer park about 5 or 6 years ago... I'd love to see the whole thing!
Nothing beats good old sci-fi! You can excuse so much of the badness of it by simply saying it's dated (oh, how well that works for the original Star Trek!).
If you could be told what you can see or read, then it follows that you could be told what to say or think - BoC
I don't know how people can say that SG-1 should go off-air! C'mon, the show's not meant to be die-hard SciFi, it's meant to be funny; just look at Anderson's character (Jack) - his sarcasm is one of the best things in the show! Then there's also his honesty "I do speak what's on my mind.. that's why I don't say a whole lot" (or something like that). You've gotta love Jack O'Neil!
T'ulk is great too, as is Samantha.. a matter of fact, I think they're all great actors and truely just "fit" and make the show one of the funniest, yet most intreguing shows in TV currently.
Long live SG-1!! (Live long and prosper my friend)
Mostly fifteen year olds filled with self-loathing, I suspect.
SciFi is starting to pull an MTV. They don't seem to play that much sci-fi anymore. Slasher flicks are NOT sci-fi. Hellraiser is NOT sci-fi. They seem to play more horror movies than anything else. And not just because of Halloween.
lol, I just sent scifi's programming department an email about how moronic it was to remove farscape, and how I was going to laugh when they took SG-1 off the air, and their channel totally blows. I guess they didn't agree with me.
The problem is Hollywood (or whatever rock they scrape these actors and writers out from under) is terrified to take chances. Ugly, plain actors, who really CAN ACT and gritty writing, which doesn't tell the story so plainly that even a drooling idiot can follow, aren't the "safe" TV is looking for. Hence the pablum Sci-Fi.
Notice how well Seinfeld worked? None of the four are really model material, but they sure could act and make people laugh. Try as they might have, even the original Star Trek crew (with the exception of Nurse Chapel, woo!) were as wretchedly hand-picked from modeling agencies as today's casts. Ok, some good looking women, but damn, even good looking women can bore you to death, and much of these shows do.
I have to see what uniform actors are wearing to tell the difference between shows, it's all the same!
Advice to anyone thinking about making TV or film: Scout some playhouses for real talent. Is there any wonder some of the better actors are Shakespearean? At least some people make an effort, too bad they don't harvest more true talent, rather than the people who show up on Star Search.

Oh my god... you are seriously the most pathetic life form on this planet. You actually pride yourself on having over 1800 comments??!! I checked your comment log... It looks like you don't get outside much. Oh, and nice homepage. I can't believe you're writing scripts to see who has the most postings on slashdot. If 1800 comments is your main claim to fame then you need to get a life. I mean, I've seen nerdy CS majors with their pale skin, puny arms, greasy unkempt hair, beady eyes, and huge fat asses, but you take the cake. I bet you get all the women at Rose-Hulman don't you? Oh wait... there are none! Not that that matters to you. You couldn't get a chick if she was 6 months deceased. Well go on, post some more comments; make sure that slashdot is your world so you don't have to live in the real one. Good luck getting a job with that resume... It's total overkill with all your supposed experience. And where's your GPA from Rose-Hulman? What's that? Are you getting bad grades because you're totally obsessed with slashdot? Too bad. By the way, if you ever see a great big bright object in the sky, don't be scared. It's the sun.
I like SG-1, but Farscape was even better.. If they get rid of SG-1, I'm not going to watch that channel anymore. All they'll have is John Edwards, and their Demon Hunter Show.
period.
That's a joke, right? You forgot the emoticon at the end. Muppets in Space may be entertaining (I liked it) but it's definitly not Sci-fi.
A Ringworld movie has been in the works for some time, but, Hollywood being what it is, it seems to be stuck in limbo. The latest news I could find on the project is about a year old; here's a link to a news story that sounds like it may have been real. No word on whether anything will come of it, but I'm sure they'll do it eventually; look how long we had to wait for Lord of the Rings.

i think sci fi could redeem istelf from its lack of orginal programming by maybe showing reruns of good sci fi shows that got canned, i'm thinking earth 2, space above and beyond, sliders, hell, even seaquest(please reply with other good suggestion). they could show like 2 episodes of a series at 7, an episode of their defunct original programming at 9, farscape, sg-1, lexx, MST3K, then maybe give john a spot after prime time. theres so much more they could show besides crossing over and horror movies, which IMO are not SCI-fi at all, they could show old eps of unsolved mysteries and stuff like that, any other ideas about what they could do for non original programming thats good and actually is sci-fi?

Currently, there is a massive online campaign going on to save Farscape. You can view it here at Save Farscape and sometimes here due to DNS problems, Save Farscape.
Essentially the current working theory on why Farscape was canceled boils down to this. In Part, Michael Jackson (not the singer obviously) and the head of USA Networks don't like Space shows. The other part, Stargate SG1 only costs around $500,000 per episode to make, where-as Farscape costs around $1,200,000 to make (yes, 1.2 million) per episode. This is why they moved Farscape to 10pm on Friday nights from their original 9pm slot, and put Farscape into the 9pm slot. They ended up losing a good part of their younger audience due to bedtimes. Why? They wanted to get the Farscape fanbase interested in Stargate while intentionally dropping ratings for Farscape. This way they could issue a statement that they are cancelling Farscape due to a slip in ratings, and actually keep the overall ratings with Stargate, all while saving $700,000.
From a business standpoint sure it looks good. But people watch the network, not robots. They get upset and angry when favorite shows of theirs are canceled, especially when there was an announcement they were picking up season 5 and it was in a contract, little be knowns to the public there was a huge out loophole in the contract. So anyhow, if you are a fan of Farscape, head over to those links and see what you can do.

Here's some supporting information I forgot to put in the parent:
There's a reason Casino's are so profitable.
Lots has been writtten about the use of conditioning methods on Casino visitors and demonstrates methods that are used in other industries that benefit from conditioning. In television, convincing you to do things(buy stuff) is very important to them. Count on just about anything you see or hear on that screen is coordinated to have a specific and calculated impact on you.
You aren't immune to conditioning. It's very effective.
Now, you may think you're getting a pretty good deal on the entertainment provided by television. But you don't understand what you're paying in return. You're sitting down in front of them and letting them work on you with every device in their toolbox, and they don't tell you what they're doing. They are doing it, count on it.
So many people are letting marketing shrinks tunnel into their heads like warble flies. It's not worth it.
Hey maybe they can follow and accelerate based on the MTV model.. SCIFI2, SCIFI-Fantasy, SCIFI-Classic, etc. One can dream.
Ok, this maybe a bit off topic, but i think a majority of /.ers would be extremely suprised at how creative Firefly is. Its funny, refreshing, and the writting has been incredible. Not to mention the great job of the cast.
One of the great twists of this western space show (yes western space show), is that they have incorporated some chinese dialogue and culture. Followers of the show have surmised that 500 years in the future there are 2 competing cultures: chinese and western.
Great sci-fi shows are still out there, they are just hiding in poor time slots in fox's lineup.

>Notice how well Seinfeld worked? None of the four are really model material, but they sure could act and make people laugh.
Good point to bring up. For some reason I tried hard to dislike that show, but dammit, every time I saw it on a friend's TV, I _enjoyed_ it.
>Scout some playhouses for real talent. Is there any wonder some of the better actors are Shakespearean?
Excellent point. I actually once hated everything Shakespeare due to my strong defiant attitude (hey, it's just the way life goes) and the fact we covered a huge amount of Shakespeare books in highschool. The more I hear about some of my favourite good actors and how they all have Shakesspearean acting backgrounds (Patrick Stewart, William Shatner), though, the more I appreciate it. Only Charlton Heston can overact more than William Shatner (and that's why I try to watch any movie with him in it!).

I have no idea what the marketing people are trying to accomplish by holding back older episodes... but for what it's worth, the sci-fi channel is running all the SG-1 episodes from the beginning. Consult your local listings, etc.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence
Well it seems that every channel is doing that these days:
I have the first one on DVD. Seen it about 4 times (By myself, showing girlfriend, showing mother who read it in her youth, and with my stupid roomate.) For those interested, here's the /. posting about the next one.
The setting is not too distant. Mankind has moved from just the Earth, colonizing asteroids, moons and other planets in the system. Along with this spread, mankind is discovering that there are a few genes on the human genome that are of, well, alien origin.
Things get interesting. The ship's captain, Dante Montana, is searching for his child, abducted years ago by raiders. His neice, Percy, is the engineer, such as it is, on the ship. Luc is the other human crew member, and the computer rounds off the complement.
I've seen three and a half episodes thus far, and it looks rather good. Check them out, but beware, the listed "start time" is usually wrong (here in Seattle, it starts at 11:05 Saturday night).
Lemon curry?
Atleast it doesn't suck, like Stargate Infinity the cartoon spinoff.
I, for one, am really enjoying Firefly. The characters have to deal with fairly authentic problems of running a small ship in space. I like the "skin of our teeth" setting; reminds me a bit of Star Wars or _Downbelow Station_, while staying a bit closer to home. The writing is decent, too.
Well, it's not as bad as Premature Ejaculation.
I know this reads like a troll, and I'm shocked I feel this way, because I really loved so many Sci-Fi shows in my life. Still, I think Firefly just has the best writers, hands down. I guess it's not the show for people who like plots about time travel, holograms and other mishandled philosophical issues. Firefly is more like the chronicles of a D&D adventure group. Whatever. It really kicks ass. ... Well, that's enough of my gushing; I'm glad I got that off my chest.
Stargate is a syndicated piece of crap on par with Andromeda/Relic Hunter/Tracker with $50 (Canadian) production budgets.
Sure you might watch it once in a while but you would never admit it. What's wrong with you guys?
b.
That's too bad, because you've missed out on what is looking to be the best new sci-fi show of the year; Jeremiah.
Some of the episodes have been fairly cheezy, but the "plot" episodes have been excellent. It is reminding me alot of Bablyon 5 - slow beginning with some weak episodes. In fact, Straczynski (of Bab5) is doing this series, too, and I think it's going to turn out to be one heck of a show.

the SciFi Channel? I thought it was the Stargate Channel as that is the only show on that channel. Open up the TV guide and all I see is SG-1, SG-1, SG-1, etc, etc, ad nauseum. Kinda like the misnamed History Channel. It is actually the WWII Channel as that is the only stuff they show.
I have been steadily widdling down the number of channels I actually watch since getting my satellite dish. Hundreds of channels but nothing of note to watch. I USED to watch the SG-1 Channel when it had B5 and Farscape running. Now, it's just crap (X-Files reruns don't cut it...I've seen 'em all already several times over).
It is almost to the point that it makes just as much sense to ditch the satellite and go back to my aerial with its 3 or 4 available channels. It has about as much variety as the Satellite at no cost. SciFi Channel indeed! My @ss!

I viewed Lexx for the first time a few days ago... and was rather shocked.
The premise appears to be a cranky old man, porno-quality woman, and an invincible man with enormous hair living in a spaceship/insect.
The episode consisted of a number of hostile, floating arms attempting to eat said spacecraft.
I can't decide whether I love it or I hate it.

The best SF on TV right now is over on Showtime. It's called Odyssey 5 and stars Peter Weller. It's about a Shuttle crew that is in orbit when the Earth is destroyed. They encounter a strange alien, who's homeworld was also destroyed in the same manner, that sends them back in time five years to attempt to discover what happened and prevent it. It is very reminiscent of Babylon 5 in tone and the overriding arc. Great writing and really interesting characters.
Do people even watch this show?

Sorry, but I don't thing SG1 is all that good. The REAL reason Farscape went down is because SCI-FI was STUPID and put it in that STUPID TIME SLOT. Time slots make or break a show. Look at FUTURAMA. Time slot fucked Matt Groening over big time.

Mayhaps its because I don't get all of them "fancy" cable stations and am limited to only broadcast stations, but I tend to get very little sci-fi. One of the really good ones out there is the Outer Limits (new eps, not reruns of the 60's show). Pure sci-fi that usually ends on a downer (but with a lesson learned, ala Aesop's Fables), now that's entertainment.

I wonder why this crops up again and again. Brad Wright has previously said that he quite expected season 6 to be the last season, it was building towards something which would be continued in a SG1 movie. Then if there was interest he has an idea for a spin of series, based on a seed he claims to have planted back in season 1.

I don't know what went wrong with Andromeda. It's got an interesting premise, rich backstory, nice effects, surprisingly intelligent use of real terminology (I like the way that they compute short-range distance in terms of light-seconds)... yet somehow it just doesn't ever come together for me. The dialog is flat, the acting is wooden, the characters are cardboard cutouts. Why is it so bad?

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence
because I gave up on everything else on TV, including Buffy, Angel and Enterprise. I also visit friends when "The West Wing" or "24" are on.
I used to be glued to the Sci-Fi Channel, but without "Invincible Man," "Farscape," and "Babylon 5" in the 7pm slot (I always miss the current 5pm slot), the only time I glance at the station is weekend mornings for "Mystery Science Theater." I don't even know when "Outer Limits" is on, or if it is (love that show). And I used to watch a couple other shows religiously, but I can't even remember their names it's been so long. I just know that aren't aired anymore either. It definitely seems that the Sci-Fi Channel goes thru management often, and it's easy to tell when cause one year the channel rocks (last year) and then the next it sucks (right now).
As far as sc-fi TV in general, the last season of "X-Files" was incredible without Mulder. His character was getting annoying. "Star Trek: Enterprise" is a lot better than its given credit for. Remember how much you hated each Trek series at series start? I hated "DS9" and "Voyager" for the first seasons, but then they learned what worked and the shows were much more entertaining. I think "Enterprise" was horrible for the first couple episodes, but it has grown on me. "CSI" isn't *really* sci-fi, but it obviously is rooted in science more than cop-show; point is that it is a fantastic show, and "CSI Miami" will get better (I just hate Kim Delaney in this show; liked her previous failed lawyer drama, but hate her on "CSI"). "Alias" has grown on me, too; yes, she's gorgeous, but her physical performance (not just appearance) makes that show alive.
As for "SG1," I used to watch the show on its original channel, but I just lost interest at some point. Now, if we could just get the Channel to finally start up a new B5 series, that would be awesome!
Right from SFC's mouth.
In the east there is a shark which is larger than all other fish. It
changes into a bird whose winds are like clouds filling the sky. When this
bird moves across the land, it brings a message from Corporate Headquarters.
This message it drops into the midst of the program mers, like a seagull
making its mark upon the beach. Then the bird mounts on the wind and, with
the blue sky at its back, returns home.
The novice programmer stares in wonder at the bird, for he understands
it not. The average programmer dreads the coming of the bird, for he fears
its message. The master programmer continues to work at his terminal, for he
does not know that the bird has come and gone.
