I recall a company executive who created an internal (to the company) stock market for product ideas... employees could spend effort working on the project to "buy" and product sales could be attributed to those who spent the effort making the product a success)...
Now let's throw a quick twist... split salary between minimum/required and market value... I'd also use the stock market "values" as a percent from the whole market and would divide the Market value salary based on that percentage... Lastly I'd base the stock market values among any of the following:
- employment opportunities for the field of study
- student and parents' interests
- dept of education interests
but then again I think the entire education system could use some attention.
actually, NTFS can handle hard links internally... you just don't ever have an interface to do it (learn to love the console!).
Anyway that said, when installing RIS (a PXE boot server for windows installations), it installs a service called "Groveler" which does exactly what you're asking... it searches through all contents and automagically converts duplicate files into SIS and NTFS-style links.
Unfortunately, i've yet to find any registry settings/etc in which i can redirect the service to ANY other location.

food for thought: Why did MS make "shortcuts" when NTFS has built-in support for true links (aside from FAT16/32 compatibility)
Just FYI, our company recently moved its corporate offices, giving chance to rebuild the conference room as we saw fit. Interestingly enough the CEO was against projectors, insisting that they force attention to one person - not necessarily the best technique for collaborative efforts. To that end, we purchased four 15" LCD's and have two at each end of the (10") table. with approx 2' of wiggle room the monitors can be adjusted to whoever is viewing.
In terms of simplicity of use, we have a thin client mounted under the table going to a basic KVM, which shares the monitors among the thin client or a VGA cable (to connect to laptops).
(note: don't ever look under the table... the KVM, in addition to the powered switch, plus power strips... aren't exactly easy on the eyes)
They noticed the port...
check it against/etc/services and got MSSQL...
but i'm shocked about 2 things...
1) he didn't check technet to see if MS was aware of this?!?... the PATCH HAS BEEN AVAILABLE SINCE JULY... how hard is that to stress?
2) if he has as much view as he indicates (broadwing, sprint, etc)... wouldn't he be able to notice maybe a FEW servers that WEREN'T going crazy?!?... because just MAYBE the admin installed SP3 or the patch?!?
-Based on this a LITTLE bit of research comparing the infected and noninfected can probably bring up quite a bit
Put yourself in the position of the vendor (Toshiba? Compaq? etc)... they are going to cover THEIR ass... not the consumer's
The simple truth is that if they are going to offer ANY sort of support with the computer (not extended warranties, etc) it is 100x more expensive to support EVERY OS UNDER THE FRICKIN SUN... what happens if I decide to install RedHat Linux, or OpenBSD, or NetBSD... What about more obscure distros or OS's... what happens if I want to install Linux on a PPC? you think Apple/Mac is going to support LINUX on their MACINTOSH?... of course not...
As much as it's annoying... remember that they're just trying to cover their own ass... even if it means you get screwed.
Ever since I learned about the differences between RAM and a HDD (especially with respect to virtual memory), i've always thought about an alternative...
Assumptions
1) large amounts of (system) memory are cheap and fast
2) OS (and resident applications) generally use MUCH less memory than us computer geeks tend to have
3) virtual memory slows us down:)
so...
assuming we have a new system w/ 1 GB RAM (even 512 would work, depending on its application)
using the old RAMDISK drivers, couldn't we create a "drive" using the RAM... for virtual memory?
now... i've watched for a while now, and everything seems proportional... we have a 486 with 64 RAM, and the OS used ~20-30 MB... we have a pentium with 128 RAM and OS uses ~40 MB... we have a PII with 384 RAM and the OS uses ~80 MB (ok... so we're gaining an advantage here)... the trend continues...
I've always wondered what would happen if the virtual memory had a response time of 6ns:D
what happens when they decide to take this paint beyond just tanks? what happens when you're on a flight and a MIG "appears" beside the 747?
i predict MANY collisions:D
also...
who's to say this wouldn't be fun to play w/ the "enemy"? basically... imagine dropping a dump truck full of this stuff from a carrier plane... circle the area a few times and we could program the paint to make it appear that there's a lake in the middle of the desert!
"Remember scouts, now that we've got these roller-lcd's, we can bring our computer games with us camping!".. "and i swear to god i'll frag your little asses all night!"
doesn't quite seem to be as authentic as a tent and sleeping bag

So does this mean that if the help was sub-par or more hurting than helpful, that we can dock them?
:)
Sounds like a good way to keep bad help off the internet!
