You could view it as an accurate statement if you view it in a very narrow way. If you wanted to handle a 64 bit in in a 32 cpu it would take ?twice? as long as on a 32 bit one. That said the 64 bit cpu would take the same amount of time to handle a 32 bit ad, but it could actually do 2 ads at the same time, but that is not something that requires a 64 bit cpu, thats the whole reason we have things like mmx registers and sse ones.
The real benifit of 64 bit cpus in the increased address space for those of us that think 4 gigs of memory is not enough:)
What's more, your assertion that MS Word would not contribute to a company's demise is unsatisfied; I find it fairly likely that MS Word would cost more than any other word processing solution given the plethora of bugs, crashes, worms and viri targeting it. In a competitive scenario, a company not hindered by these costs would have a strategic, and hence competitive, advantage over one that is, and hence have greater survivability. Most (All?) Federal Banks use Lotus Notes for a damned fine reason (it's not a big target).
Your solution seems rather self defeating, would you stop using OS Y if it became popular to avoid attacks/virii? Then would you switch to new fangled OS N until that also became popular?
Please note choice of letters are purely random and are not meant to reflect any OS, (I used to use X as my variable...)
In the article they point to netcraft which lists a windows 2000 box as being up for 2 years, in the same list (http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.last.html ) they also have Mac OS X machines that have been up 1340 days which puts it's last reboot at 3.67 years ago, but the problem is Mac OS x was only released in early 2001, so it could have been up for at MOST 2 years, me thinks these stats arent worth anything.
I wonder how long it will take for the RIAA/MPAA/Corporate America to bribe their politicians (or judges) into calling Vanatu (Where Kazaa is based), or any other small country that inconvinces them, a terrorist state so that they can have the US take it out and impose a puppet government.
