A phaser's energy pulse doesn't travel at c--if it did, we'd never see even a little streak in any scale small enough to see the crew or the enterprise. The directed-energy weapon has at least some mass to contain the energy.
E=mc^2... Ok... so that on its own doesn't say much (it gives you the energy of a particle based on its rest mass)... but Einstein's Theories on Relativity basically say that as you approach the speed of light, mass is converted to energy... so you need to modify the Newtonian p=mv to include gamma= 1/(sqrt(1-(v^2/c^2))), to account for relativistic effects on the mass of the particle. Namely p = gamma*mv; or p = mv / (sqrt(1-(v^2/c^2)));

And pieces of knowledge like that CAN get you laid. But if talking Trek could prevent ovulation... I wouldn't stop... what great contraception.
As a "math/science geek" who is dating an "optics geek"... i can tell you this "femto-burning" is USELESS for increasing the data storage capacity of DVD/CDs. The constricting factor is the laser's wavelength. The laser's wavefront has a size that is propotional to the wavelength.
Since a laser can't "see" objects (i.e. read data pits) smaller than the wavelength, computer chips are manufactured using Extreme-UltraViolet (EUV) lasers. However, size and $$$ are the current limiting factors for transitioning EUV to the desktop transition.
Layering seems to be the way to go with getting more data on a disc (see a previous/. article on getting 87GB on a disc)

That book really makes you appreciate what submariners have done for our country. From laying cable taps in the middle of Mother Russia to delivering little black men to foreign shores.
I can't wait to read the NR-1 book.
BTW, I asked my recruiting officer, the current admiral no longer interviews sub skippers by having them wait in his coat closet for an hour. Rickover may have been a little nuts, and he made sure he had the same kind of nuts people driving his boats. (i.e. Anal-Retentive Detail-Oriented nuclear engineers)
The most random trivia fact about the older subs versus the new boomers has to be, is that the missle bays are long enough to excerise the crews eyes to infinite so that they never loose their depth perception (the vision is restored quickly upon return to shore-or so I understand)
I hate to be a nay sayer about neat cross platform networking applications... but as a Windows user (and a computer user in general), I understand that my computer is only secure when I remove it from a power source.
Therefore, I would not be inclined to install software that would allow people to listen in to conversations in my house.
If I had kids I definitely wouldn't run the software... just in case they accidently managed to get a connection to "bedroom noises"...
My parents had an old style intercom... and I found out that by pushing the "End Transmission" Button when the line was closed, you were actually able to listen in to every other room in the house... THANKFULLY, I can still say that I believe my parents are "celebate":-)
2 layers disks exist. Namely those disks with Widescreen on one side, and 4:3 on the other side.
Of course these disks require special cases... those cases that are impossible to extract the disk from. Which inevitably means you get fingerprints all over one side... reverting it back to a 1 layer disk.
George: Um, excuse me, I - I think you forgot my bread. Sig Nazi: Bread -- $2 extra. George: $2? But everyone in front of me got free bread. Sig Nazi: You want bread? George: Yes, please. Sig Nazi: $3! George: What?!? Sig Nazi: No sig for you! [snaps fingers]
If you are worried about radiation, you might want to kick your wife out of bed, b/c she is exposing you to 0.1 millirems of radiation per year. Which incidentily is the same amount of radiation you experience by living within 50 miles of a nuclear power plant.
Before you kick your wife out of bed, which will have its own adverse affect on having children, try doing the following to reduce your radiation exposure:
Throw away your alarm clocks and wrist watch, the glowing hands give you 0.6 mrem/year.
Or try giving up bananas, most people recieve about 40 mrems/year per year in Potassium-40 radiation
But the absolute worst source of radiation, cigarettes- 1.5 packs per day = 8000 mrem/year
And move away from coal fired plants; Uranium occurs naturally in coal, which when burned exposes you to 1-4 mrems/year
All thanks to having a girlfriend at a national lab (which probably means she radiates more than your wife... so I am going out and buying lead blankets) For more radiation doses: Lawrence Berkeley Labs
Intentia did make a poor decision from a security standpoint. However, the page was going up in less than 12 hours, a previously scheduled time. So the news services knew to look for the information. In fact a news service finding the information in such a small window is pretty good evidence that they were searching for it. Or even waiting for it to appear ahead of schedule.
None of that compares to the total lack of journalistic integrity. Reuters makes a bad name for other news agencies. Not because they got the scoop. They never CONFIRMED the scoop. They published the report with out confirming that the report was final and valid. For all they knew they could have been publishing Intentia's Accouting Department's idea of humour. However more likely, it could have been a working version of the report that the webmaster was playing with while waiting for the final release for posting at the proper time.
Without a hyperlink from the Intentia's mainpage, Intentia may be releasing the information (I will leave that discussion for other threads) however they are not guarenteeing the voracity of the information.
