But PETA is a terrorist organization. Who stalks people, damages property (not just throwing paint but slashing tires damagig vehicles ect.) and do confront hunters and other "mean people" sometimes with force. This is well documented just not published due to the fact that it is not politically correct to do so.
(i) Permissible acts of encryption research. Section 1201(g)(2) creates an exception to section 1201(a)(1)(A) to permit an individual to circumvent a technological measure in the course of an act of good faith encryption research provided four elements are satisfied:
(A) the person lawfully obtained the encrypted copy, phonorecord, performance, or display of the published work;
(B) such act is necessary to conduct such encryption research;
(C) the person made a good faith effort to obtain authorization before the circumvention; and
(D) such act does not constitute infringement under this title or a violation of applicable law other than this section, including section 1030 of title 18 and those provisions of title 18 amended by the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986.(17)
As a practical matter, this exception is not yet in force as it is a defense to a violation of the prohibition on acts of circumvention - a prohibition that will not go into force until October 28, 2000.
DeCSS should fit all areas of this clause. The system that the information was gathered from was legaly purchased, this was nessacery to do this research, there had been multiple atemps by the community to get this information to create a DVD player, and this definatly is not computer fraud. Seems like this is already needed to be in effect. their is already one case that needs it for it's defence.
The EFF they support a lot of opensource programs that benifit us all wiether BSD, Linux or whatever they will continue to fight for our ablility to work on the projects.
The second half of Footnote #14 is perhaps the most interesting part of the whole ruling. It says: >...even if DeCSS were intended and usable solely to permit the playing, >and not the copying, of DVDs on Linux machines, the playing without a >licensed CSS "player key" would "circumvent a technological measure" >that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work and violate the >statute in any case.
Would circumventing and illegal access control be illegal?
We all know that the only reson for this access control is so that they can sell the DVD's in America for one price and in other parts of the world for another. Perhaps we need to file a class action lawsuit against them for this, beings the courts have already ruled that this is illegal.
I hope that someone has taken the time to send the producers links to sites that have good information on DeCSS, and the Linux communitee. Please anyone sending comments REMBER YOU ARE REPRESENTING THE COMMUNITY DO IT IN A POSITIVE LIGHT.
Question; I'm a new user to Linux, was introduced to it abotu 6 months ago by a freind, previously had been a Windows user with Mac/DOS/CPM/Prodos experiance (OK so I've been around for a while). I am a user not a programmer, did some programming a long time ago for fun - basic just doesn't do much anymore. This friend showed me to/. and Freashmeat as places that I can find software/help when needed. A couple of days after the release of DeCSS I downloaded it, was and still am in the process of building a new computer installing a DVD. Now my question is, should I even consider using DeCSS, will it be around in 6 months, should I just make this a windows machine and keep my old box to learn Linux?
This is easy "sorry sir we are currently out of the rebate forms, we should have more in appx one week if you would like to stop back." And this is legal
Though not generaly considered a "geek" he should califiy as well as several others have. He is responsible for books getting into the hands of many common people. This should be as important as the printing of books. Until him (and some others like him) Reading was only for the wealthy the common man did not know how to read and had no use for it because he had no acces to books.
I wish all a happy holiday season and prosperous New Year (sorry, the Millinium starts in another year). And would like to thank all the posters and story submiters for the education, I have been out of this for a few years and need your updating. Now I'm headed home to spend the day with my wife and daughter, working on holidays.....
This type of thing has been done for several years. I personally know of a holstien(common dairy cow) that has given birth to 3 wild gaur calfs(these are wild cattle like a water buffalo from India and are highly endangered).
I would like to comend you for your desire to help kids in your area. This is how we can help to ennsure thhat our next generation is better off than ours. I would recomend checking with your local library, most of these ofer computers and internet access for everyone that wants it, and could always use help. Also check with your community center they may already have a program in mind and just need someone with the expertise to carry it out, and if your community does not have these available speak with yur local city reprisenntitives they are always willing to help people better their communities without costing them money. Is it worth it, YES. I personally volenteer my time teaching classes and giving tours at my local zoo, educating them on our enviroment. The enjoyment that the kids get is more than paymment for any services I provide, and I may be saving a child from the streets.
just because a person is technically cappable does not always meen they are not using a service like AOL. We can also none technical family members that need access, and/or be in the middle of nowhere where our choices are get a T1 or use AOL, now the T1...
Just a note to let everyone know I spent some time as a docent for Henery Doorley Zoo in Omaha they are freezing genetic matterial from several endangered species (Tigers, Gorillas, Elephants, ect.) this is not to provide for cloning but for artificial insinmation (they have already done this wioth tigers and gorrillas). The problem with cloning is that in order to have a large enough gene pool to support a spiecies you need appx. 900 different genetic specimines, this is a lot of feather boas.
