    5%? Apple's marketshare is currently below 2%.

    But I wouldn't say they're inferior.

The Sixteenth Amendment gives the IRS authority

So because they declare themselves to have the authority, they automatically have it? If they make a law saying that killing Chess_the_cat and taking all his worldly possessions is legal, does that make it RIGHT? Since when can people just declare themselves to be god? If they do so and you accept it, you DESERVE to be ruled.

The problem is that the government is interfering in our private lives, and each year they interfere more than the last. Unless somebody stops the massive expansion of their control, we will certainly become a slave nation. If they can decree themselves anything they want, the only thing stopping this is their good intentions -- which the politicians have pretty much proven does not exist.

  3. Re:Asked and answered on Gnomoradio: Creative Commons Music Sharing · · Score: 1

I agree with your prophecy about the future of music, I can't see the RIAA lockin going away any time soon, but I take minor exception with your statement that "few people want to listen to indy music." I remember a kickass indy band from Florida I discovered one time called Marilyn Manson that I really liked, and another called Nirvana. Later, of course, they were picked up by the majors, but at the time, they were just like the bands on Gnomoradio... The next big star is probably playing on there right now, the only thing they're lacking is widespread promotion on MTV.

Offtopic: The RIAA convinces you to listen not with your ears, but with your eyes, if that makes any sense. How else can you explain Britney?

  4. Re:How long will this last? on Gnomoradio: Creative Commons Music Sharing · · Score: 3, Insightful

I would think this is worse for the RIAA, if it catches on. Like Microsoft, who turns a blind eye to widespread piracy but has secret Hallowe'eny-type meetings on how to covertly kill One-Percent-Of-The-Market Linux (through SCO, etc.), the RIAA knows that piracy of their music is not as bad as people ditching them completely to pirate OTHER people's music. Irrelevancy is their greatest worry right now, not piracy. And rightly so; they're easily replaced. At least piracy means they're still relevant.

We are not looking at the iPod or Rio Karma since they contain a chip made by Portalplayer that you have to sign away your firstborn to see the docs for.

Apple does this regularly to discourage tinkering by open source people, like their choice to use Broadcom Wireless Cards over any of the other vendors who are well supported by open source and have open documentation. Look at the list of things unsupported on the PPC platform and realize this is not because of lack of effort on the part of the Linux guys, but because of lack of documentation and roadblocks set up by Apple themselves.

  7. Re:Apple hate RAM. on Apple Introduces New G5 iMac · · Score: 1

Apple doesn't want to play the memory game. Apple knows that the customers know they can price shop and buy it elsewhere, that's all.

Give me a break. If Apple actually wanted to give you the freedom to go somewhere else, they'd give you an option of ZERO Ram. On my PowerBook, I was FORCED to buy 1 Gig of RAM off them, and my second Gig elsewhere, otherwise I'd have to throw out their default 512 meg stick in order to free up a slot.
