This is stupid. I like the idea of building an mp3 player from a normalt USB stick, the NES controller is less interesting. So, can I go build an mp3 player now? NO, the article sucks, it just "Oh, oh, oh, look what I did". For all we know it doesn't even work.
Tell me how you build the bloody thing. What hardware did you use. I doubt that the NES controller has the parts and just need you to plugin the USB stick.
I agree, that software did was it was designed to do.
The same can really be said about the Ariane 5 accident, that is if I understood it correctly. As I remember the story, the software loaded into the Ariane 501 rocket was designed for the Ariane 4 series rockets and failed done to the design differences in the two rockets. This was a human error, the wrong software was installed in the rocket, it was not buggy, just designed for at different rocket, that is if I remember correctly. The point is that you can claim that the software i faulty, if you place it in an environment, for which it wasn't designed.
What does Linux has to do with this? He uses OpenBSD. If you read the article you would know that they still use Windows on their workstations so they can still use what ever tax software they used earlier.
The really fun part of this article is that they need to put an OpenBSD firewall in front of their checkpoint firewall to keep it safe.
Denmark adopted the EUCD as one of the first countries and we're still allowed to break copyright protection if needed. Don't blame the EU for this one, Finland made this mess themselfs.
Yes, the EU often make mistakes, but this is not their fault. That being said, the EUCD is still a dumb idea and completly useless.
Some countries don't keep people in prison for 50 years. Lift sentence in Denmark usually means between 8 and 20 years. Most of those who get life in prison are out earlier than those who get 20 years. All this assumes that you don't kill a cops, in that case you will have to stay in prison for a long time.
Prison is not to punish the criminal, but to rehabilitate and to give society a break from that person. Only backwards countries use prison as a punishment. Death is just unacceptable. The death of one wrong person alone removes the justification for the death penalty.
If Norway will not buy MS Office, you open the marked to a new software company which can either fix OpenOffice or deliever another office suite. If there is money to be made someone will write the code.
Open standards does not mean that they are to use OpenOffice, there are other alternatives.
How about : "Unfortunately, the Phoenix name was already used by a web browser that ran on top of a BIOS". A web browser that runs on top of a BIOS or could they mean Phoenix the BIOS manufacture, but then where does the browser come in?
The man behind the curtain look more like Ty Semaka (http://www.tysemaka.com/). He's guy behind the lyrics and art work, well most of it anyway. It doesn't look anything like Stallman.
Cool, so 52% is interested in Linux. Only 15% was unsure about Linux, the remaining 85% have already made their mind up about running Linux or not. Finally an amazing 10% of all SMB corporations is already planning to try out Linux.
The fact is we don't have enough pull to demand most of the time
Very true, which is why it really doesn't help that much that OpenBSD take this fight alone. Of cause they did get an amazing result from their campaign for free drivers for wireless networking chips.
Which make you think: "Why is OpenBSD doing this and not FreeBSD". I think it's sad that the FreeBSD developers don't seem to care that much about having free drivers (the AAC is free I believe, but the management interface is not).
Of cause what really annoys me is that the Linux developers seem to care even less. Why is it that the developers of free software can't stand togther and demand documentation? And why is it that it's the smallest team that must make these demands?
Sadly I don't think most users care. Sure people on Slashdot is going to think twice before using AIM, but how many ordinary people will know about this? Even if people did know, I doubt that most of them will see to problem.
No time to read the article... It's not really that long.
YES, he runs Linux on he Apple... I have no idea why Linus getting new hardware is news. If he actually ran MacOSX, then yes, that would be a bit funny or even interresting.
Yeah, "average Joe" doesn't want to buy a new scanner, but neither will he care about Visio and Photoshop.
My idea, force this Joe person to pay for his software and he will leave Microsoft in around 8 seconds. He could even pay his new scanner with the licens money saved.
I hate Joe Average aka. Joe Sixpack, he's a stupid argument and I don't have to care about him. Most people don't need Windows and Microsoft Office, they will be just fine with Linux and OpenOffice. Most people who brings in Joe seems to forget that he doesn't know how to install Windows, so it's not a big problem that he can't install Linux.
Actually Gates pick the perfect timing. At the election last week employment was a big issue. Denmark really need to lower the unemployment rate and currently the politicians are aiming kreative jobs and jobs in the IT sector. Losing 800 jobs right even before beginning investments in technologi sector could be pretty scary for a lot of our politicians. Just like anywhere else in the world, most of people in our government know shit about software, computer or the implication of software patents. Basicly they just listen to whoever has the best lobbyists.
And one other company have already informed the government that they can't work with software patents, resulting in their 500 employees losing their jobs. That brings us to 300 jobs in exchange for accepting software patents.
6GB is peanuts, large DWs are terabytes. Buildin ability to understand star-schemas and do automatic optimisation for one would be nice. MOLAP and to some extent HOLAP storage would help speed up things in the largest DWs. Small things like that. Of cause tools for doing the data analysis would be nice as well, but thats really an add-on and have no place in the DBMS.
Very true. Pretty much any service I need on my network will authenticate via Kerberos, except my Windows workstations. I know it can be done, but not without buying a version of Windows 2000/2003 server and doing some trusted realm stuff with AD.
Microsoft should not speak to loudly about interoperability before starting to share more APIs and providing better support for other peoples formats in their own software. Billy Boy seems to forget that interoperability, like trust, is a two way street. Right now Microsoft expect all others to conform to their specification (without revaling the specification of cause) and to trust them, while providing nothing in return.
I gave up using calendars. What I can't keep in my head or on post-its doesn't get done. It's not that I don't like the idea, caledars are great, both the page and software version, but I can't remember to add stuff to them. Result: My calendars are always blank and therefor of no use.
What I need is a calendar which will add tasks automaticly.

Agreed. AFS is exceptional nice. However I think it still have a max file size of 2GB.

It's just a badly written article.
The man behind the curtain look more like Ty Semaka (http://www.tysemaka.com/). He's guy behind the lyrics and art work, well most of it anyway. It doesn't look anything like Stallman.

I think that's pretty impressive.
How would you like to spin your statistics today?
What exactly makes 50,000,000 a barrier? And does this barrier only apply to open source browsers or is a general barrier?
The fact is we don't have enough pull to demand most of the time

Not hard to sell cheap music when you break the law.

Install FlashBlock/Flash-Click-To-Play or whatever the name is these days. Or simply avoid installing Flash.
I never needed Flash for anything. People keep telling me that you can do useful things in Flash, but I never actually seen it.

Well you didn't really port it did you. Your Java app still runs on one platform, the JVM.

True, but it lacks many features required for things like dataware housing and location based services.
There is a lot more to DBMS's than just your plain old relational database.
