  1. USENET on Movie Industry to sue File Sharers · · Score: 5, Interesting
This has always made me wonder. Why are they targetting just p2p and not USENET? I know you can pull down a lot of files from USENET with the benefit of a centralized server so you don't have to wait for a ton of people to jump on to get your bandwidth capped.

I always wondered why USENET is not targetted.

But most of those don't take much user interaction or are easily replaceable. Air conditoner who would touch anything on the air conditioner to break it so much that it would put people of work. Unless the heat in the building is so unbearable they can continue to work. Now if someone is waiting for someone else to do work on their computer because they need the file, but there computer is in for repair they have to wait. The computer is a tool in business its not a convenience or a perk. Lunch rooms are their they have minimal maintenance unless someone rams their car through them or breaks down walls. A computer on the other hand is needed for company work. I can do without the lunch room, radio, or air conditioning in a programming enviornment your most important tool is your computer. Then give me a reason why people in a work enviornment should install any program besides the ones they need for work, or to do their job?

I agree this is the best bet. Lock down the user system. Especially if this is a "mission" critical PC. The PC is a tool and is not there for the user's enjoyment. If they can't handle the fact that they can no longer download the next best demo from download.com or some other site to try on their work PC then they don't need to be using it. The work PC is used as a "tool" and needs to be locked down so users can't "infect" it. Its sad but true that you will spend more money educating users then it is to lock out their computers. If the CEO or owner of the company can't see this start showing him statistics from adware/spyware/virus removal your IT department does alone on these computer. That may cause them to open an eye!

Anyone who wants to believe in something will, no matter what type of proof you give them. Pictures can be faked, so can computer records, documents, etc...

The only way to shut up a naysayer and convince them that we have landed on the moon and have the technology to do so is by bringing that person to the moon and saying see "We are here!" what do you have to say?

Of course their response maybe "How do I know this is really the moon?" A no win situation at best.

Sometimes it is really useful for me to write something down really quick on paper than it is for me to boot my system, or look for my PDA. And even when my system is up or I have my PDA in hand I still opt to write it down.

I wish I had a place to store what I have just written down, just this morning before a meeting I was looking for a piece of paper that had something on it that I wrote down more than 3 months ago.

  6. What about existing technology? on Embedding Data Signals In White Noise · · Score: 1

This is great that they are coming up with more ways to give us a ton of advertising, but I want to know what about existing technology? For example I have a PCS Vision phone (just got it the other day and kind of sad seeing how another phone will be needed to take advantage of this technology) with GPS or location tracking built in. When am I going to start seeing the apps that function like a GPS? Such as goto some WAP site enter where you want to go and your phone will direct you to the location by using a map database and the location from your phone. I would like to see current technology being taken advantage of instead of new technology being developed, while the current technology is still being underutilized. Btw, this sounds great! But until I see current technology being utilized it always is going to stink to be on the bleeding edge.
