Being conservative doesn't mean opposing all change-- it means being cautious about change. The founding fathers knew the slavery issue would have to be dealt with, but in order to form the free republic that would be necessary to enable this change, they had to accept compromises with powerful, wealthy Southerners. That's why the Constitution said that no laws regarding slavery could be passed until 1808, yet what the Democratic party would call a bunch of insane evil right-wingers (based on their "conservatism") IMMEDIATELY passed a bill in 1808 banning the importation of slaves as soon as it was possible.

Constitutional issues aside, it does say that the board cannot recommend rationing or withholding treatment. But when we have another panel saying that women don't really need mammograms until 40, and even then only every other year, if the 'death panel' follows that perilous recommendation they aren't really withholding any treatment based on what the government claims is appropriate-- are they?

The US government just caused all of your old wrecks to be crushed with "cash for clunkers." So much for that strategy. So instead of reusing old parts, we have to recycle the metal (and throw away a lot of the unrecyclable plastics and fabrics), which takes more energy and is less green. And we'll have to junk more cars because an economical source of parts no longer exists. But it'll keep people employed in "busy work" making lousy cars that shouldn't exist-- a very Soviet situation.
