"Hell, this is a place where even the act of *taping a television show* will land you in jail."
I live here and I have never heard of a prosecution let alone someone going to jail?
"And let's not forget that Australia leads the First World in anti-freedom laws."
Umm, no. The US leads, we follow and just pretend we thought of it independently. With modern communications it is more noticeable that we march lockstep with the US, 20yrs ago we were always 2-3yrs behind.
"Just because we don't send people to Australia for it doesn't make it not a crime."
The law is an ass, were the people helping themselves to food and water after Katrina, looters? This is why judges exist and why they should not be constrained by mandatory sentences. Unfortunately a majority of the US supreme court now thinks it's ok for a cop to shoot a fleeing suspect regardless of the crime.
"Incidentally, my family came over in the Gold Rush"
Bingo! Sending people to Australia was akin to a moon shot 200yrs ago. Penal colonies were just that, colonies. Gold was the reason for the first big jump in immigration for both the US & Australia.
As for TFA, IIRC we were alowed to tape TV shows for personal use before we signed the FTA? I just love it when they give stuff back and make it sound magnanamous!
For those of you who don't know Ruddock, he is the guy who locks up children in the desert.
"...protect our greatest economic assets"...."That ephemeral, rather than concrete, goods are now being touted as Americas most valuable possessions is nothing short of depressing."
"Its possible no one would be able to handle certain situations."
I am not advocating bio-weapons but the Universe itself is a situation no one can handle (eg: Bird Flu, Aids).
"How does creating a "species" help us again?"
A species that inhales CO2, exhales H2 and tastes like steak when cooked on a standard BBQ would be handy. Existing benefits can be seen in just about every domesticated species of plant, animal or fungus. Eg: The modern dairy cow, maybe not an entirely new species but they certainly give way more milk than when humans first trained them to stand still. I imagine milking a wild cow could be described as a situation no one (at the time) knew how to handle.
Einstien himself thought his calculations were just a mathematical curiosity. At the moment string theory is also a mathematical curisoity. Spacetime, the expanding universe and black holes to mention just a few were all "found" in mathematics long before there was any evidence they were real.
The reason people give string theory so much attention is that the Universe has been modeled extremely well through maths. There is a reasonable hope that the maths in string theory will lead to a better real world undrestanding. Nobody has come up with any physical evidence and it could be decades before we get an answer either way.
"why do you allow your government to make these victimless-crime laws?"
It's not just the US and not just recently, most of the western world has had similar restrictions since the days of Turing and WW2 (refer to the U-boat fleet and the battle of Midway for the victims of weak crypto). Very few paid attention until communications went digital and the algorithm behind modern public-key encryption was discovered, before that crypto codes were "crackable" using statistical techniques (given enough data).
Once the math behind the "uncrackable code" was known to the public the genie was out of the bottle and these laws rapidly became antiquated and pointless. At the moment nobody has an advantage via crypto, if a practical method of factoring large numbers was found public-key would be useless. I'm sure the spooks would be stomping over any replacement method discovered, after they shot the maths nerd who managed to crack public-key. "Knowlage is power" and their bosses are in the power business.
Nah, Monica had a real job, my ex was allergic to employment.
I have no doubt that many governments and corporations fit a diagnosis of phycopathic. I still hope at least some of the people who comprise the organisations are a little more sane.
So what would it take to get the current mob to answer questions under oath?
Point taken on the sacking and stupid perjury. I thought impeachment was an auto-sacking (forced election). At the time of the blow job scandal I was distracted by my wife leaving to give someone else a blow job.
"the comparison to children means they don't have a firm grasp on reality."
So when you advocate the govt should act like your parent, it implies that the govt and the public are assuming "the people" don't have a "firm grasp on reality". It also implies that you think you did not have a "firm grasp on reality" as a child and still think your own grip is too feeble to be treated like an adult by your government.
So to condense the point. I have concluded I am wasting my time with someone who sprouts flamebait and then strongly implies they don't have "firm grasp on reality".
Now run off and troll with someone in your own league.
I do not live in the US, so I am really just responding to the alleged letter and the instantaneous insults. Your opinion echoes many others and I am willing to trust you have more background knowlage of the subject than I do. I have some years of experience that would indicate farmers are phycopathic slave drivers who see little difference between workers and animals. I try not to let it blind me into thinking it is hopeless to reason with farmers in general.
For all I know this guy could be your exception. I'm still trying to figure out how Clinton can get sacked because of a blow job but nobody can do anything to stop the current stench in the whitehouse?
My point is not about the merits of the bill. My point is that he asked for sensible dialog and people start hitting the cheap sellout button on the strength of an unremarkeable factoid. With a little background knowlage it does not take much imagination to think that the (spontaneous?) comments from artists could be astoturf. But you only assist the lobbyists efforts to sideline you by jumping straight to the insult phase. You can beat lobbyists with logic, unless of course the politician really is performing favours. If the politician's background is the lobbyists logic, astroturf and bunch acronym filled insults from nerds, does that make him corrupt/stupid/evil?
"Backgroung knowlage" is important and this issue would be considered esoteric by most people over 30. It takes more than a $10K donation, (from people who sprinkle $10K donations like confetti), to convince me he is being pig-headed about pushing the bill in it's current form.
What is his motivation to publicly post such a question if he was in the lobbyists pocket? If the answer is: "to show nerds cannot communicate", why risk upseting an entrenched stereotype?
Skepticisim questions a rush to war, cynicisim produces it. I'm still not convinced the letter is genuine!
"When, if ever, is a simulation no longer just a simulation?
If we are talking about self-awareness as defined by mirrors and other human behaviour, lets just say humans will always want to feel special!
(I belive) "Self" is a simulation of the real world (including the physical self) that has enough granuality to pick out the physical self. It is generated in humans by a "calcium pump computer" using the data from a network of trillions of nerve endings.
The common threads amoung the many human simulations of the Universe is (ironically?) refered to as reality.
I have owned quite a few parrots, some seem to necer tire of attacking the mirror others are only curious for a short time then ignore or avoid mirrors. Parrots have a "personality", White Cockatoos look almost identical but up close their "personality" makes them easy to tell apart. Sure they may not be able to demonstrate self-awareness to a human, so what, can a human demonstrate unassisted flight to a Parrot?
Even using broad definitions of "self-aware" that would include parrots, it is a mighty big claim in TFA. Let's see if they pubish something other than a press release.
"the **AA would love banning digital to analog conversions, too.
That could cause some problems. It would take some increadibly responsive (and expensive) speakers just to output digital audio. Basically the speakers would need the ability to produce square waves in the air with sufficient frequency to recreate the sound (say 44kHz).
Please note this is not a personal attack against you. I am using your post as an example.
I know what is sad, the fact that so many people instinctively take the lazy argument and assume he has been bought. Even though I don't live in the US and don't have a clue about this particular politician, I do recognise US politians are gaining a reputation for selling laws to the highest bidder. The letter ended with a rational request, yet many will jump to the same irrational (but understandable) conclusion and ignore the offer to discuss.
I also know what is strange, another poster said they could not find the transcript by following the link. I searched the site using the word "analog" and also came up empty handed? Would the OP like to comment?

Ditto.

Yes but first the common man must recognise GIMP as something other than a vulgar term for a disability.

No, all that is required is patience!
