There is a reasonable hope that the maths in string theory will lead to a better real world undrestanding. Nobody has come up with any physical evidence and it could be decades before we get an answer either way.

The letter ended with a rational request, yet many will jump to the same irrational (but understandable) conclusion and ignore the offer to discuss.
