  1. Re:Would you want,... on Gateway Puts Wasted Cycles to Work · · Score: 1

You make a good point. However, I haven't seen an unlocked computer on display in a store for quite some time.
They are all running Flash presentations selling themselves to you, or showing that incredibly nifty beizers screensaver. Both of which are password protected, so it might be okay.
I think the funniest thing about these locked computers is the screensaver running behind the password prompt. WTG Microsoft...
Now you get display model monitors for next to nothing because there's a password verification prompt burnt into the middle of the screen :)

That's a very interesting point of view. I've never thought of it that way.

Although I don't beleive that the radio airplay is dictated by sales, it does seem to be a little less "pop-py" than it used to. It still doesn't make me want to listen though.

We have numerous stations here in Toronto, however only 4 playlists. Granted the playlists might be in a different order if you're lucky my only 4 just the same.
    /.Country Hits
    /.Adult Contemporary
    /.Teen Beat and Pop
    /.Indie College Radio

Those are your choices. On the occasion that I go driving, in the 3 hours it takes to get from here to my parents place, I hear the same playlist rotate. [same station, bounced down the lakefront]

That's sad... 3 hours of content? ha! not even.. 3 hour playlist ,inus commercails gives roughly 2:10 playlist.

RIAA wonders why we crave music downloads? How many times can you hear her croon about 'Making Things so Complicated' before you wish she'd have some minor complications of her own.

If the content exists, I need to be able to find it. One headlining song beating me over the head is not going to make me buy the CD. Even if I did like that or a particular song, if it's the only one I know, then why buy the CD? all I have to do is listen to the radio, it'll be on again in a second...

I understand. That's why I say 'not a monopoly'. It just seems that the big corporations are getting bigger, and the little guys trying to scrounge a few bucks on the side are getting screwed by the companies they advertise and raise revenue for. There was a time when the internet was a free open space. There were ideas to be shared, thoughts to be provoked, and money to be made. Now there's big companies, copyrighting mouse clicks, and image dimensions, deciding where you can go to buy what you want. ISP's deciding what you can and can not see, and all the provocative thought int cyberspace has been relegated to 'nerds' at /. and extremetech. It's just a little dinenheartening that one day the internet will cease to exist as an entity of it's own. It will be an affiliate to CNN-Time-Warner-MicroZon.

They might not be a monopoly, but the Canadian Postal Office mail delivery trucks have AMAZON.COM written all over them. Government contracts for cheaper shipping sounds a bit monopolistic to me.

  5. Interesting combination on Gateway to Ship PCs with Pre-Installed DRM Music Files · · Score: 2, Interesting

I do find it interesting that computer makers are making it easier to rip and burn, while supplying pressplay et al inside it. This bothers me a bit. There has to be something backroom-ish going on. I agree all things equal, it may make the college freshman grab one, but other than that I see no special reason for it. So what are they getting out of it? Advertising, sure, but whatabout pressplay logging? You think they are sharing their logs with Gateway so they can determine what songs to put on the next generation of PC's? Maybe Gateway just wants to see how much their computers are actually used for the digital music they push so much in their adverts. Either way, I don't like multi company bundling. It just smacks of small print consumer stick-it-to-em EULA's.
