  1. simple solution to cheap routers on Why Do We Have To Restart Routers? · · Score: 1

i have my router and modem installed on a powerbar with a timer. the timer is setup so that the power get cycled once a day (when we're all sleeping) and we never know about it. actually started out using this as an energy-saving trick, as our home computers are never being used between 1am and 8am... so why leave a router and dsl modem switched on?

highly recommended for all home office users!

  2. Re:Not that simple on Experiment Shows Traffic 'Shock Waves' Cause Jams · · Score: 1

Looking past the car in front is a great way of smoothing traffic congestion, however its near impossible to do now given the number of Hummers, SUVs and other oversized cars(*) on the roads, unless you're driving one of these huge things. people in standard size cars, small cars, or sports cars, can not see through, or past them to the next car in front, so the only work-around is to leave a larger buffer zone between you and the car in front. And sure enough, someone else will merge in to your buffer zone. If cars had standards for how low the windows had to be, and how high brake lights had to be, it would mean that nearly everyone (if you're driving your Lotus in traffic, you really need your head looked examined) would be able to easily practice the "watch the car in front of the car in front" technique without any effort at all. (*)I don't include trucks in this argument, because generally truckers are quite good at leaving lots of space in front of them as they cannot brake as quickly as a car when slowing down, and they can already see several vehicles ahead due to the drivers seat being so high. so yes, i guess its not that simple to make all car manufacturers stick to some common standards... oh wait, aren't they already forced to comply to other "safety" standards???

  3. some reality, please? on Alternative Browsers Impede Investigations · · Score: 1

First up, i must admit that i am an author of one of the programs in the class of those mentioned in the article - http://www.webcacheview.com/ I've had detectives and other "police" (corporate IT watchdogs, schools, etc) contact me with some pretty interesting situations, like trashed hard-drives and partial files recovered using undelete. Ok, so in these cases, computer forensics can be difficult. The article does not mention this kind of thing at all. But then again thats probably not the majority of cases : Majority of cases are on Windows, and they're idiots who probably use the browser that lets them do whatever crime they're doing with the least effort. Whether thats IE, because its already there, or Firefox because someone said it was the "most secure". For these cases there are _plenty_ of free/shareware/commercial tools on the market. I'm sure a google search could find three which could do the job of figuring out whatever they need figured out. tj
