You comment that you don't mind spending $2000 for a new Mac so you can switch to OS X, but you don't consider the same scenario for Linux. So, why not consider plunking down $2000 on a ThinkPad and running Linux on it?

Because, to paraphrase Clinton, "it's the OS and software stupid.". Seriously, I hear people on slashdot day in and day out talk about hardware choice but are you really interacting with the hardware or is it the software that shapes your experience. I personally do not give a second thought usually to the fact that my MBP has an intel chip in instead of a G4 or G5. Why does the hardware matter so much to you people?

Linux is a fine server OS but it lacks commercial and commercial quality software for the desktop. Even a lot of freeware on OS X blows similar linux software out of the water in terms of usability.

Also, is the ipod store as populated with songs as they say it is? Why do you base your purchase decisions based on how you feel about the views of others? Give different players a try on the displays, ask questions from the store staff and buy which ever one you find to be the best.

I have a feeling that you are trolling but I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Back in the day, Apple used to rule the home PC market as well with the Apple II. The fact that people have PCs at home have very little to do with the effectiveness of MSFT marketing. Rather, it has everything to do with availability of games and some other niche software.

I think the GP was referring to consumer devices like the iPod and consumer macs. If you only count the retail home market, Apple is one of the top brands by marketshare for computers as well.

Talk Origins is somewhat of a misnomer. Nobody is really talking to each other but rather talking at each other. You cannot argue someone into or out of believing something. This goes for both the atheists as well as theists. Faith is a personal matter of the heart and you cannot enter into faith through arguments alone but rather through life experience.

There are a lot of hypocrites on that site. They claim that religious people are closed minded while completely ignoring anything the other side presents out of hand. Science is supposed to be about trying to discover how things work, not about following some new dogma.

Right now, any honest scientist would tell us that they really do not know know the universe began. For a while, the scientific community bought into the Big Bang theory but at some point they observed that their models did not work in the real universe. The invention of dark matter and later on, dark energy were attempt to reconcile what they believed they were seeing with their old models. String theory is an attempt to unify various theories under one umbrella but it unfortunately is not testable and hinges of the existence of dark matter and dark energy. I cannot fathom why scientific community did not go back to the drawing board to create a model that fit the known universe rather than inventing fanciful things such as dark matter and dark energy. They might as well have called it invisible pink unicorns and leprechauns. I cannot help at laugh at the irony of people believing in such things without a shred of evidence while ridiculing religious people for believing what they terms as an invisible man in the sky.

This blind faith in popular theories is not just restricted to theoretical physics but also appears in the biological sciences as well. Science is supposed to be a tool for discovery. It is not supposed to supply the meaning of life or delve into things which are best left to philosophers and theologians given our current state of technology.

Too much of the so-called "science" we see today is nothing more than new age philosophy combined with pseudo-science. I long for the days or practical and applicable science as that is science that could not possibly run in conflict with religion. I also long for the days when science did not depend heavily on suppositions and circular logic. Many of our past scientist were both scientists and theists because they understood that science was merely a study of how things work, not why we are here or whether there is a good.

Ignore me a troll if you wish but I am a theist who views the science of today with a sceptical eye and only trusts theories which have observable proofs that do no depend upon other assumptions. I see the practical sciences to be of a great benefit to society.

MSFT is bigger because they convinced IBM first to use their OS in the IBM PC (PCDOS) and then turned around and supported all of the clone manufacturers with MSDOS. They also played on Steve Jobs naivety to get a hold of a prototype Macintosh long before the official launch under the auspices of developing software for Mac OS.
