  1. What I got taught on Comments are More Important than Code · · Score: 0

In highschool, we got taught to add lots of comments, even when my rebelious uprisings didn't change this. I refused to comment silly lines like a = 25; And on my first exam I did get degraded because of this. So then I just started adding larger blocks of comments to blocks of code. When on work experience, I got told by someone in the company that it's best not to comment your code, because once the project is finished, and they let you go.. then need to upgrade their code, I (as the programmer) would be pretty much the only one that could read my code. Meaning I'd always (mostly) have a job, because other programmers would waste their time trying to decode what I wrote. On one side, this is a nice idea... on the otherside, it's pretty rediculous, seeing as that after a few months I probably won't even remember what I coded in the first place. So now I just tend to add comments on a regular basis, but not on every line. In college they don't even teach us to use comments... which is odd.. although in this so called CS course we're only using VB.NET... quite sickening.

  2. What about us students? on MS To Limit Security Fixes to Legal Copies of Windows · · Score: 0

Well, me being a college student, and notoriously, us college students are usually pretty broke, or at least we use our hard earned money wisely. I'm just saying, no-one 'our' age would have the money to buy a licensed copy of Windows. I know for a fact that if the price was ALOT lower then I would definately think about buying it. But, why buy it when there is also a better alternative? Now ok, there might be special student deals to get a licensed copy of Windows (that I have not yet seen). I got my copy from school (they copied ot from a retail version) ok this may not be legal, but I can see where they're comming from, and trying to help their students (of course that was in computer classes where we needed certain packages). Also, I did not 'buy' my PC from a retail store where you get a Windows CD with your PC. I built it myself, and I refused to pay 200 (?) for a licensed copy, because (sorry for my unethical thinking).. it was just plain silly to be spending that money on a bunch of software I 'could' get elsewhere for free. I'm not saying it is right, but it sure is how most people are thinking. I also use Linux, and I'm very fond of it, but (as mentioned above in another post) my family members are not too keen on the idea, because, they do not know what Linux is, they think it is some sort of hacker tool and, well, that just brings the trust level all the way down. No matter how much I warn or encourage them to at least give it a try. to be honest, Windows for them, is just ALOT easier to use. Now, my girlfriend IS a 'secret' geek. And she at least listens to my advice about securing her box (virus scanners, firewall, spyware scanners and so forth).. but... she is pulled away of the idea of installing linux on her system, mainly because of the same reasons I mentioned above. Of course, this move from MS is going to make it alot easier for the Open source community. So, on one side, I understand where MS is comming from, but I do not like the fact that they are using their monopoly position to force this down peoples throats.

  3. Re:so sad... on Taking Halo 2 to Xbox Live · · Score: 0

But has it ever occured to you guys that most people don't have enough money to buy the needed hardware to play most modern day PC games (that look decent!). I mean consoles are pretty cheap (and you can get em even cheaper second hand), and all games are specially coded to be able to produce nice grafics and smooth gameplay, something that I miss on my own pc. I would rather play games on my PC, but having them on a console is just wonderful, it does save me an aweful lot of money.

  5. Virus scanner on First Ten Programs on New Install? · · Score: 0

May I also suggest (seeing that it IS windows) that you install a good virus scanner... This is the FIRST program I install before I even venture out on the net after a new install.

  6. I don't get it! on Catching up with Wine · · Score: 0

I don't see why Microsoft has to be so 'strict'. I mean if you buy the software you SHOULD be able to do anything you want with it (except pirating it) but I don't see the harm of running the bought program under another operating system that "emulates" (or should I say: Can run..) windows programs. As you can clearly see, Microsoft is very scared of the Open Source community and the *nix scene. I don't know much about all this copyright law thing, but I don't see how this falls into it. Anyway, this is just how I see it!

Well over here in Belgium we have LAN parties with around 1500 people.. It just reakky r0x. And that post by someone you said that large LANs are dull cause you don't know anyone.. Well that's just not true.. I'm pretty 'anti social' .. but I met heaps of people on that one large LAN.. these large LANs just bring the people together.. everyone is ALIKE.. it was one of the best times I've had.. :D

  9. Harry Potter on Review: Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets · · Score: 1

I read a few of the posts.. and I saw how stupid some of them were.. judging the Harry Potter books with the movie and stuff like that. It is not only a childrens movie. I'm 19 yet I have read the book (I don't have time to read them all) ;) and the first movie.. I will be going to see the second movie when it is released over here.. well for my sisters birthday.. but I am not TOO ashamed to go and watch it. I thought the first movie was really n33t and something new. Not all movies need ot have blood and violence (alot) in them. On another note, I really really can't wait for LOTR The 2 towers.. I've been waiting very impatiently for the second movie since I watched the first one. This is really the best movie I've ever seen.. But this is a bit off topic ;) I just hope the second Harry Potter movie won't dissapoint me too much.
