Hopefully you are not serious. There are many people out there, myself included, who never actually spend a dime of the change they receive. However, I do not simply throw this money away. It makes its way to a change jar that sets atop the dresser at home. Now a penny here or there isn't worth much... If you happen to save up those pennies over a period of say six months though, you will know their true value. Cumulatively, I do not believe I would just be willing to tell someone that they could just keep sixty or seventy of my hard earned dollars. If we can't respect the value of the smallest portion of currency, that being the penny, then don't be surprised when that $.65 drink at the soda machine now cost $1.00 or perhaps $2.00, since we don't use small increments anymore. Or the $1.50 fee at the ATM suddenly becomes $2.00. You can bet that Sam Walton knew the value of a penny. It all adds up. Look at your expenses by the month or year, not by the moment. It will help you to appreciate those pennies. But again, I hope you were just kidding.

  3. I tire of hearing about the max interface speed... on Maxtor's 80GB Drive · · Score: 2

The max theoretical transfer rate of ultra ATA 100 is 100 MB/second. So what??!! You'd be hard pressed to convince me that this 5400 RPM drive is going to outperform my 10,000 RPM SCSI Cheetah. And what is often missed when SCSI and IDE interfaces are compared has nothing to do with the transfer rate of the interface, but the fact that the processing of I/O from the hard drive is greatly offloaded from the processor to the SCSI controller, freeing up cpu cycles to do other stuff. After using SCSI for some time, wouldn't think of switching to IDE again. I can't remember the last time I made a frisbee out of a CD-R. And yes, I can actually use my computer when I am making a CD without having to worry about ruining the disk. That is the true power of SCSI.

  4. Re:Authentication isn't the real problem! on The Perils Of E-Voting · · Score: 1

This is precisely my thoughts on the topic. It does however seem that voting online would be the next logical step, seeing how Clinton just passed into law the ability for a digital signature from a so-called "smart card" to be admissible as proof of identity. This just has too man implications which are VERY serious and VERY bad. What happens when someone steals your verified identity online and votes for you? This is a very dangerous scenario. How would you know any different if the government itself wanted to fix the election? It could simply process your "voting transaction" right into the bit bucket, all the time confirming that your vote has been counted. then what does your vote count for? Online voting is a good idea in theory, but leaves too many areas for extremely easy and dangerous corruption. Built a better mouse trap? Build a smarter mouse. As much as elections cost these days, I am sure someone would be willing to pay a well educated cracker quite well to fix some of the votes. What we really need to get people to vote more today is to do things the way they used to: close every damn thing and give everyone the day off work for voting. People had no reason NOT to vote back then. But noone gets voting day off anymore. It just isn't as important as the corporate bottom-line anymore...

This is a company that definitely needs to learn how to play well with the "other kids". It is plainly obvious that this is a company that doesn't give a damn about the consumer. Probably due to the fact that most of their direct sales do not involve the bottom level consumers of their products. Most people haven't a clue what the difference is between one type of RAM and the next when they go into Best Buy and pick up their shiny new CTX or ACER. Computers and internet technologies do not seem to be the type of thing that the legal system of this country understands enough about to preside over. It is unfortunate, but after one anti-trust suit this year, it seems unlikely that the justice department is going to take on another, especially so close to an election. Rambus will likely continue to make things worse for now. We can only hope as consumers, the state of quality and RDRAM prices will improve. I hate to say it, but it looks like the consumers are just gonna suck this one up.
