  1. On the road to Dilbertville... on Would You Take A Paycut for More Interesting Work? · · Score: 1

I can tell you from experience, if the work is drudgery it is a bad situation! Co-workers come and go, but drudgery is never ending; and it constantly wears on you. Ten years will pass, and suddenly you'll realize your in a bad Dilbert cartoon. You won't be sure how you got there; you'll just realize that's where you are. If you think taking a pay cut now is painfull, try changing careers after ten years of salary increases and one or two promotions but narrow experience. It isn't easy. Regardless whether you take this oportunity or another, you need to move on. Too many people find themselves trapped in a job by a combination of comfort and fear. The working conditions are good, the co-workers friendly why move? What if the new job isn't all it's cracked up to be? What if the company fails? What if, what if what if? Don't let fear keep you rooted in place.

Most waste is removed prior to dumping the treated water in the local stream/river. It was found that cleaning the water improved the general health of the population and made for better tasting tea.

DIRT may or may not contain organic matter, but dirt is not organic, it is mineral.

Human shit as well as cat shit and dog shit contain numerous microorganisms which are potentially dangerous to humans. E. Coli is only one of many. To kill these microorganisms, the compost must reach temperatures over 160 Deg F and stay there for an extended period of time.

Sewage is not generally dumped directly in large bodies of water, it first passes through SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS (AKA Wastewater Treatment Facilities) where much of the nastiness is removed. The problem is disposing of the Stuff that was removed. The options being incineration, landfill, and composting. Just don't put that compost on veggies!

  5. Its not the competition! Its the consumer! on FatWallet Strikes Back Using DMCA · · Score: 1

The worry isn't about competition, it is about the consumer.

By the time the price information was available on FatWallet, each company's strategies were in place; prices were set and circulars were printed. There wasn't going to be any price jockeying, because as you pointed out, its expensive to reprint fliers, change advertising, etc.

Where FatWallet causes a problem is, it permits consumers to plan in advance how to best take advantage of bargains and shop for the lowest prices. Before ever leaving their house, a shopper can strategize how to get the most bang for their buck, where to buy each items for its lowest price. This is the last thing any retailer wants. Walmart or Kmart or Target wants to lure a shopper in and sell them everything on the shopper's list.

You should note it was not just Walmart who sent out the cease and desist, it was also competitors Target and Kmart.

Characters are not generally trademarks; Mickey Mouse _may_ be a special case because Disney uses MM like a trademark. Other Disney characters such a Goofy, Pluto, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, etc. are not trademarks and eventually should fall into the public domain.

  7. Re:So the real question is... on Copyright and Copy Rights · · Score: 1

You are missing several important points.

Most important, it is not just the overall work, which enters the public domain, it is the plot, setting, scenery, _characters_, etc. Once Steamboat Willie is public domain; so is _Mickey Mouse_(baring trademark issues.) Once Mickey enters public domain, anybody can make a Mickey Mouse movie. Perhaps a porn version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Disney, AOLTW, etc are trying to protect their franchises. If anyone can make a Mickey Mouse movie the value of MM movies in general are reduced. Similarly, Disney is concerned by the goodwill surrounding its "family friendly" movies and has squashed porn versions.

Also don't overlook the value of plot, dialog, etc. Once The Wizard of Oz goes public domain, anybody could use (recreate) the script and update it as they wish. This would be a tremendous saving

Finally, both The Wizard of Oz and Steamboat Willie do have value. They generate revenues when shown, and can be sold on Video/DVD/whatever new recording gizmo that comes out. Doesn't matter if competitors show them once or a hundred times, that is still revenue Disney/AOLTW is not booking and their competitors are.
