  1. Hate IE8 or just vaguely dislike it... on IE8 Beats Other Browsers In Laptop Battery Life · · Score: 1

...it is seriously better than any other IE version in terms of not making web designers sad. So the comparison I would like to see is between IE7 or 6. As long as 8 won.

The two hits it got on my system were both false positives too - one an entry in my Restricted zone list, the other eMule, which it mistook for aware-laden eDonkey. I'm not surprised if it get more hits than Spybot like that! Oh, and it missed some tacking cookies.

As an EU citizen I'm relieved that this rumour has finally been scotched after decades. I only wish I'd actually heard it first, so I might have had even a brief opportunity to disbelieve it. Perhaps soon rumours will circulate that this rumour was once widely circulated. I shouldn't give them much credit though.

  9. Re:Konqueror - Safari -- is GIMP next? on Adobe Says PCs Are Preferred · · Score: 1

Indeed. One great thing about being a Photoshop user is that, while I normally work on PC, if a project demands I can drop by someone else's studio and muck in on Mac. You can almost forget what platform you're on, and I don't think that can be said for many apps. They might be unwilling to, but I think people who mostly work on Macs could admit the same thing. Apple would really piss off the graphics community if they broke up this pleasant "Photoshop-space". There's no gainsaying the fact that Apple have lost an important bit of their psychological armoury if graphic apps, Adobe's especially, now work faster on Wintel. They can accentuate all their other positives, but it is just embarrassing to be the makers of the computers that Moore's law doesn't seem to be applying to.

  10. Ported to x86? on Adobe Says PCs Are Preferred · · Score: 1

I was told - how's that for an utterly useless reference? - that 7 was the first version of Photoshop developed primarily for the PC. All I can say as a user is that it does seem to work noticeably better than the previous version I used (5.5). In particular, it is stable almost beyond belief. Can't break it even if I try. And as I'm running it with just half the minimum recommended RAM, I am trying.

If I may be allowed to quote my own column from a week ago:

I read (this is true!) in the learned journal Nature that biologists are divided on the issue of creating human-mice hybrids. Some think it's okay to engineer crosses between people and rodents, others think it's just wrong. Really, you don't expect professional biologists to be so indecisive and squeamish. That's not good enough.

The next time I meet one I'm going to go straight up to him and ask. "Come on now, are you a man or a mouse?"
